Driving to Dubai

baedaebok's picture

I'm planning to drive to Dubai in March for a weekend.  I need to pick-up some books and things.  I'm calculating trip costs, distances, etc.

What's the driving distance between Doha and Dubai?  Using a ruler and Lonely Planet's map, I calculated around 685km.  Is that true?

Not really sure...but guess its more than that...It takes around 10-12 hours if u drive at an average speed of 120 km/hr...(If there's no traffic at the Saudi & Dubai borders..)

It is approx. 850 kms. the congestion at saudi border is the only delay causing factor. otherwise the road is pretty clear. better to get a visa before hand (both saudi and uae) and then plan the trip.

baedaebok said Visas ...

I've driven to Dubai three times before so getting the Saudi transit visa is a piece of cake (a QR70 piece of cake).  Up to now, I haven't had to arrange a UAE visa beforehand (nor a Omani or Bahraini visa).  Although Bahrain I should have done something in that little bldg in that island on the causeway.

is there sufficient petrol station on the way? I am really scare of running low fuel cos my old car's petrol meter is not accurate. I would like to top up every 100km is that possible?

where  can I buy a map? are there good road sign for the direction do I need to rely on the moon, sun and stars

baedaebok said Petrol and map issues ...

You'll have no petrol problems if you fill up at EVERY station along the way.  Stop even if you feel ridiculous.  I did this and I had enough petrol.  But you must be careful because there are on or two dry strips so STOP at every single station you come along even if adding only QR10.

To the UAE border, there's no problem or need of a map.  To the Bahrain border, that's difficult and needs careful planning.  See my maps in another thread.
