In Standard Arabic the name is pronounced [ˈqɑtˁɑr], while in the local dialect it is [ɡitˁar].[5] In English-language broadcast media within Qatar—for example, television commercials for Qatar Airways and advertisements concerning economic development in Qatar—the name is pronounced "KA-tar", with a distinct differentiation between the syllables from the forming of the 't' sound.

it signifies the fact that ...it signifies the fact that Qatar was famous for very frequent rain. Qatar is a derivative of what means drops or droplets in the arabic language- up to my knowledge.
Gheed Tikriety said
two meanings ...the meaning either come from the word " Qatra" and it means "Drop" and Qatar means " Drops" they said it was rainy country in the past so it took the name because of the rain, or it come from the great Arabian poet how came to this land and lived in it , his name is Qatari bin Fuja'a, so it took the name from it, just god knows the truth.
