Actualy, to answer Expat Sueno's comment, the government pays lots of attention to these things. There's a video uploaded on some other website that i found which shows the minister of interior on the site of the fire. So yeah the state is actually involved positively. Its cool that Qatar Living didn't remove the link in cumbersome reply to the website that started to compete them!the guys there send people to cover the fire with 5 videos and intreviews with officials on fire fighting dept and police ... What happened to QL?

We have to have more fire extinguishers on walls at Soaq area to stop the fire from the begining when its small! that is what they will realise now!

Now dont say that because i was there for first 4 hours not a single reporter was allowed to get in or interview any of the officials.

Come on, MD - have a heart!

These guys have worked long and hard to establish their fabric businesses, but they're not in a situation like we would be in the US or the UK where we would have insurance. . .so all their hard work just went up in flames - their means of supporting their families, gone.

The wealthy residents depend on the fabric souks to find the gorgeous fabrics for party dresses, to have their custom-made abayas made, etc - and now that resource is gone. It would be a win-win for the Emir to help out, and I do hope he will; I can't imagine that he'd turn a blind eye :)

Eve's picture

Eve said INSURANCE ...

The answer is the shop keepers should of had insurance. Especially the guy that just opened as he was in debt to the Bank, anywhere else in the world it would of been required. I was told even Renters should have fire insurance here as you will be held accountable if your rental villa burns down. I know their is Renters insurance but I was never aware of fire insurance. Imagine how safe the towers are if they can't put out fires on the ground!

It's easy to say that they "should have had insurance". . .and I hope they did. But in reality I'm not convinced that they even had access to it. Fingers crossed that they did, but I can't imagine that they had huge policies - in terms of large enough to setup shop somewhere else. :(

Kaldoosh said RE: Tragic event to mourn ...

I have read yesterday in Arabic Speaking newspaper Al-Rayah that Al-Thaqafah Publishing House suffered heavy losses because of the fire.

It is said that 160 thousand titles of books were damaged.

it is labeled as a big cultural catastroph here.

What worsen things is the coincidence between the tragic event and the arrival of new books that day.
