I saw the fire in person, ...I saw the fire in person, and what the firemen had to deal with was not just an easy job. There were no access roads to get to the heart of the fire, and the heat was intense (like curl your eyelashes intense!).
The fact that the fire did not spread and was contained in just a small area of the souq shows the hard work and the good job they did. It could have been a lot worse with all those stores and buildings connected. It was really windy which made matters worse, but they were able to put out the fire with minimal damage. It could have been a huge disaster. Before you criticize them, why don't you try doing their job for a day?
and mjamille28- it certainly was a huge fire not a collapsed roof

I have seen a similar ...I have seen a similar pathetic attempt to put off a fire in Villagio a few weeks after it opened. The fire started in a shop. A very small localized fire turned in to chaos, due to lack of procedures and training. Everybody was running in all directions and not even the public was kept away.
It was a pathetic display of organizational skills... unfortunately common in this very young country.

The location of the fire ...The location of the fire yesterday is just a few blocks away from our office. So, I can say that I saw it all. It started at around half past ten in the morning and yes, it was only a small fire. There was only 1 firetruck taking care of it but then eventually the fire spread rapidly. It is true that one of it was a textile shop that's why it was quite difficult to keep the fire from spreading.
By the time I was about to leave the office, that was at around 6pm, there were still smoke coming out of the buildings. I can remember seeing grey, black and white smoke coming out off it.
I think that if they could've have sent more firetrucks to help put out the fire, it could've been more helpful. But then again, you can see the water was just aimed at the smoke and not even on the base of the fire. I'm no fireman, but I know that if you're trying to put off a fire, you should aim on the base as well. Apparently, there were far from doing that.

Offensive! ...It is really offensive to say,"Why are you working here if you don't like here so what, GO!" It is based on facts that Qatar is being dominated by foreign skilled labourers due to inefficient or incapacity of the country for Manpower supply. Whereas, majority of Qatari citizens are in pedestal level. And yet they don't need to work because they can pay. The one thing that is very idiotic notion is most Qatari people are so defensive with its own flaws. Maybe the one thing that they should say is " we appreciate your comments or any violent re-actions" because it is true. Am I right? Every people in the world Qatar sucks! The one thing is for sure, you need improvement - socially!

For da_vinchi ...Do you know all the details about shutting off a fire? Do you know that they may used base foams or others chemicals which is 4 times than the usual water can do and it depends on the materials source of fire. I've seen that place. Its full of garments and looks confined space. It is very difficult for the fireman to go inside. Garments are just like rubbers that even it melts the fire is still on it. Try to think of it even if you have all the PPE's but still you cannot do more inside coz of the small walkways. Pare wag mo namin sirain ang moral ng mga Pilipino sa mga comments mo.

Poor Maintenance ...You see it all over Qatar buildings are poorly maintained and equipment is old and in bad shape, given they said it was an Air conditioner that caused the fire either the electric wiring was not up to code or it was old and not maintained. I think we need better standards of code enforcement and inspection processes! I guess wasta is working too well. Also, shop keepers store goods in ways that are unsafe as well, many times stocking so much its hard to move in the store.

Qatar is new ...Qatar is a new country with new technology so just like every country it takes time to work through its growing pains. Hopefully they will build water tanks near to commercial areas so they can have water to put out fires more readily. I think transporting water to the fires also makes the putting out more difficult it has time to grow! Even in the mtns in America we have to have underground reserves to fight forest fires.

Can you imagine any other ...Can you imagine any other country where a relatively small fire would be commented on by so many people? For goodness sake, this is a country with only one city, it is easy to get things out of perspective. I can't think why so many people live here, so much of the time isolated incidents such as a fire, being hassled, shock horror a purse being stolen (when actually it turned out she had left it on the counter, something the poster forgot to add to his initial post) are treated as everyone's business and of national importance. I am not saying that those who lose their lives, their homes and their families don't have my full sympathy but stuff happens. It happens in Qatar, the rest of the Gulf, Europe, US Asia etc etc etc. I know where I feel safest for sure.
