Latest news from Qatar
what does RAND wants?
An exclusive interview with Qatar University president Dr. Sheikha Al-Misnad to Al-Arab newspaper have created a new controversy among many local bloggers & newspaper columnists. Many speculation is flowing about the role of that RAND corporation plays on the recent Qatar university reforms. Many locals have outspoken about QU reforms and some considered it as an attempt to westernize the local eduction!!!
Dr Almisnad responded in her interview "
The presence of opponents of the reforms is expected , and they need time to understand the change and accept it"
What i don't really get, why are many locals against any sort of reform? Is there really a hidden agenda about the RAND initiative?

This one appeared on the net when I was looking for RAND-Qatar ...http://www.qatarlivi...
Somebody thought about RAND being Zionist.
Hence the debate.

I worked for a while at QU ...I worked for a while at QU and I was dying to see the changes that took place now.
Many departments were old fashioned and needed to be shaken up. And I was disappointed to see so much objection to modernisation. Probably because many of them worked for too long and were waiting for retirement so learning the new skills required in he new system was too much hassle for them.
What I don't like about RAND is what I've heard recently that they encourage sufism in Qatar. Why would they interefere in a religion they don't belong to?!

Genesis ...Maybe they want to teach you grammar.

Adey ...sorry, i didn't get you?
Is that personal or just you being sarcastic?

QL ...Are you sure?
why would they encourage Sufism?
Most Qataris Are Wahabbi Sunnis, and no one actually practice that in the entire region.

genesis ...Title of your thread, to be grammatically correct, should be:
What does RAND want?
or
What is it that the RAND wants?

I've heard it from different ...I've heard it from different sources and recently I've read a press release about Qatar Foundation producing a world-class movie about the life of some Sufi figure I don't recall his name. And Al-Habeeb Al-Jafri (a well-known Sufi) is being hosted by Qatar Foundation frequently.

And why, Genesis, probably ...And why, Genesis, probably because Sufists are perceived as less violent than wahhabis and shiits.

QL ...But Sufism, as far as i know is not even a sect!
Plus it's being practiced differently from region to another. I mean, Sufis in Morocco or Egypt are not the same as in Iran or Pakistan
QatariLady said
I don't know about the ...I don't know about the details of Sufism but what seems to attract RAND to it is their general ideology that centres around 'love'. It sounds good but according to what I hear, it involves weird practices that RAND of course doen't care about.

There was a report by RAND ...There was a report by RAND 5-6 years ago recomending propagation of Sufism among muslims. http://www.rand.org/...
However, i think the reasoning is flawed. Extremism can originate even among sufis, many sufis had political ideologies and fought war like Imam Shamil of chechniya.

What has RAND done to actually encourage Sufism? ...Writing a report is one thing; affecting policies is something else. I always assumed the attitude towards Sufism was more in the interest of inclusion and as an alternative to extremism. But then, I have NEVER had any problems with Sufis. I'll read the report inked by Hapy.
There seem to be so many accusations about RAND but have never seen any evidence of direct policy offered in support of them. They are a "Think Tank" and basically an intelectual lobbyist. No one is forced to follow their ideas. To be frank, in Qatar I usually just write them off as the typical Arab penchant for conspiracy theories. If there is any truth to the concerns though, I would like to know.
