Shellfish and The Bible

exiledsaint's picture

In the bible eating shellfish is outlawed but I don't see many Christains following this. (However in the next book it is considered ok)

Why is it banned and why do very Christains follow this rule?

Just as you say, in the "next book" the dietary laws of Judaism are overturned. Therefore Christians made the decision shortly after Christ's death not to keep the laws of kosher. The day of worship was moved to Sunday and pork and shellfish and the meat/milk issue were made moot. All - Gentile and Jew, male and female, slave and free, circumcized and un - were welcomed into the community.

"But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10)

Can you explain this then? Abomination I would intepret as do not eat

That is correct. But Christians do not follow the Levitical holiness code. For instance, we feel it is permissable to "round the corners of the beard" and to wear clothing of mixed fibers.

Exiled Saint.. Christ says in the new testament .." Its not what goes into a man that makes him unclean but what comes out of him". Trust this sheds some light as to why there are many such rules found in the Old Testament that are not followed today. Tithes for example are one rule that is now obligatory (not compulsory).. it literally meant the Tenth.. i.e. a 10th of your earnings is to be offered upto God.. Again was left open once Christ stated that you give what you give from the heart.. whether big or small... without fixed numbers or rules.. It created a big stir in his day no doubt.. but it also reveals the essense of religion and spiritualism.

God didnt want the money. He wanted us to understand gratitude, sacrifice and sharing. Its not the object but the intent and feeling that counts.
Yeah the Church did make a killing on it back then. Nobel causes were funded ofcourse. Though a portion of it did corrupt the keepers. But thats a topic and discussion for another day.. perhaps over another forum as well eh?

A Rabbi, A Minister and a Priest were discussing how they shared the offereing collected.
The Rabbi said, I draw a circle and throw the money up.. whatever falls in goes to God, the other I keep.
The Minister added ' I have a similar system, I draw a line and throw the money up.. whatever falls across the line goes to God the rest I keep'
The Priest smugly smiles and says.. " I throw the money up.. whatever falls down is for me "
