Philippines on high alert for typhoon Lupit
MANILA: The Philippine military deployed boats and helicopters to the north of the country yesterday, as officials warned Typhoon Lupit could cause more devastation after two storms claimed nearly 1,000 lives.
The typhoon was not due to hit the main island of Luzon until Thursday, but authorities were on full alert as the region was still struggling to recover from the twin storms that caused massive flooding and deadly landslides.
“We have been pre-positioning food and transportation assets in areas likely to be hit by the typhoon,” Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro told reporters.
The navy said it had sent 18 rubber boats, as well as trucks, amphibious vehicles and helicopters to northern areas of Luzon.
The army said troops from its engineering units were also being deployed to the north, while the air force said rescue helicopters had already been sent to areas in Lupit’s projected path.
Chief government weather forecaster Prisco Nilo said Lupit was expected to bring torrential rains and strong winds that could cause major damage to Luzon’s northeast coast.
Nilo said Lupit could dump about 20 to 25 millimetres of rain an hour.

should closely monitor the progress of LUPIT ...Effects: LUPIT's large circulation has deteriorated upon entering an area of drier air. The eye has become cloud-filled as shown on current satellite images. Its outer & inner rain bands remains at sea...not yet affecting any major islands at this time. LUPIT may begin to affect Northern Luzon beginning late Wednesday (Oct 21) - if the forecast movement continues, thus deteriorating weather conditions can be expected. 1-day rainfall accumulations of 75 up to 200 mm (moderate to heavy rain) can be expected along its rainbands...with isolated accumulations of 400 mm or more (very heavy to extreme rain) near the center of LUPIT particularly along its projected path.
