Philippines NOT a retirement heaven?
I came across an article on Forbes which lists 10 retirement heaven.
I was not entirely surprised that Philippines didn't make the list, but I was somewhat surprised that Malaysia and Thailand made the list.
Here's what Forbes has to say about it:
Thailand
Warmly welcoming of retirees and ideal for seniors on modest budgets, Thailand has everything from bungalows on Phuket's blue lagoons to urban living in bustling Bangkok. Considered Asia's best buy for quality health care at reasonable costs. But the good private hospitals are in Bangkok, so make sure your retreat on the water is within three hours of the capital.
Downside: unpredictable politics.
Malaysia
Exotic mix of Chinese and Islamic culture, welcoming to retirees, low costs and spectacular coastline make Malaysia a strong contender for the budget-conscious seeking a retreat, but also increasingly for the wealthy wanting an Asian tax haven. Kuala Lumpur is not the easiest place to live in, but, for health care reasons, avoid straying too far into the beautifully remote islands.
Downside: racial tensions and emerging-nation infrastructure.
Ok. Now read about Thailand. If I changed Phuket to Boracay and Bangkok to Manila, that description would just fit Philippines perfectly, right?
Then read about Malaysia, if I just changed Exotic mix of Chinese and Islamic culture to, let's say, Exotic mix of Chinese, Catholic and Islamic culture, the rest would be a good fit for Philippines, except, we are not quite a tax heaven...
So what went wrong with the Philippines?
Your thoughts?

What went wrong with the Philippines... ...... is safety. Kidnapping to get money, extremist groups which control huge areas... just not appealing at all to expatriates (non-Philippino nationals).
It would actually be nice to keep this topic in English as I would like to be able to understand peoples' opinions on this subject. Thanks :)

I think because of ...I think because of corruption,.....not sure!!!well what the hell, i'll still be retiring there anyway

Different for you, Don... ...... as you are a national :) For us it is different, people seem to look at foreigners in the Philippines and see money signs on our heads. I lived in the Philippines for 2 years and I do know how corrupt it is. If you wave money in front of a doctors nose, then an x-ray machine which didn't work suddenly works and the technician materializes out of thin air. Don't need a drivers license - the police man will be at the main road waiting for his daily pocket money. I could go on and on and on... but what for? Sad though, as I do love the place and would LOVE to consider having a retirement business there. But what for? I would pay 10 times more (at least) then any local person for anything, so no point to do so.
I still love it there despite many negative points :)

MrEmochie... ...... I have met many pure philippino people whilst living in Pangasinan (Alaminos) and I can say I LOVED living there. I would get on a trike every morning and buy fresh vegetables and fruit, go to the fishmarket and chose my fish for the day, play Tong-it, sing karaoke, eat balun-balunan (spelling?) and adidas... I could just go on and on about it. I have made friends for life.
I hope your fellow kabayans understand what you meant - because I sure did and you made me smile :)

Alumnar hit... ......the nail on the head. I have worked all over the PI, from Baguio to Davao, and eventually you just get fed up of being asked to pay three times as much as you should for the basics...tycal eexample - I pulled into a gas station near San Fernando, my Filipino friends driving, and asked for a three bottles of water...answer, 10 peso, no sorry, 20 peso (ok) no sorry, that's each. Goodbye! And believe me, I love the PI!
If you're living life on the edge, you've got too much room.

Basta ako magulo man ang Pilipinas o hindi I just love living in there. Just the thought of it makes me happy.

Philippines is not a retirement heaven...congratulations! ...It only means that there is a lot of activity there. I went there last year and believe me ,Philippines is neither a place of the weak and old not for the weak of heart. So much fun and so much party. I loved every minute of my stay. Please keep the oldies at bay ;)

my take ...Retirement living is more than nice beaches and/or a bustling city. Retirees have different needs. Most of them are drawing very little income from their pensions and most of the time, don't have insurance benefits. Health care I believe is their top priority. Notice the article mentioned inexpensive health care cost and proximity to such. Case in point, my retiree in laws, who are very well off by Philippine standard, moved back to the Philippines. They refused to "live"; instead choosing to save their money in the event they will need medical attention.
I saw an article years before where it mentioned Philippines being one of the costliest places to get hospitalized (is this a word?) in Asia. More than, Singapore, more than South Korea. Both developed countries.
Violence, graft and corruption, lack of good publicity, very weak tourism industry, poverty all contributes to us not getting into this list.
