Dont let them catch you??? Dont drink and drive in the first place. You are putting innocent people in danger.

I hope everyone who drinks and drives is caught and thrown in jail. All it takes is one accident and you can ruin someone's life forever.

not very good idea ... if you got caught or kill someone and loosing your job ... then you would wish you could turn the clock back. It is away far too late by then.

for QR 50 to pay the limousine it is not worth it.

i should ask an extra allowance from DH because i always become designated driver on our night out lol.

jauntie said I think you are all misunderstanding Johnjo's comment ...

If I was to say

"I don't want to be caught by the police whilst I'm under the influence of alcohol", I would most likely mean it's best NOT to drink and drive and so avoid being caught by the police in that condition!

Ergo Johnjo said:  "dont let them catch YOU !"  He simply left out the end of the sentence .... "in that condition".

Give the guy a break.  I've met Johnjo and I think he would agree we learnt our English grammar at different schools of life, isn't that right Johnjo :D  Absolutely NO offence meant by saying that to this nice guy, whatsoever!

I thought it was nice of him to warn people they may be caught if they try to flout the drinking laws and should be aware that the police are on the look out.

KellysHeroes's picture

KellysHeroes said There is something confusing about this ...

According to traffic law, Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs or any other mental stimulant will cost the driver 6 points.

The question is: why to consider adding points if the expatriate driver will be deported.

I agree with Novi question about applying the law in this regard on Qataris and expatriates.

Unfortunately also. Traffic police is giving more attention to Drunk driving and are not much keen about Drugs driving which is more dangerous.

We always look at the results. Looks like the number of casualties id not reduced which means the extreme and severe penalties applied did not treat and cure the epidemic. I think Traffic police should reconsider the whole situation.

The law is clear but what we hear is confusing. Unless the deportation thing is a rumour. The law states that the fine is between 10000 and 50000 and/or one month to three years jail. Deportation is not mentioned anywhere.

rami-leb's picture

rami-leb said FROM THE US EMBASSY The ...

FROM THE US EMBASSY
The Consular Officer and I have been fielding a number of queries
regarding “drink driving” resulting in targeted police stops which led to
immediate deportations. The fact of the matter is that there is a little
truth mixed with a generous dose of urban myth. A lot of the rumours have
been driven by recent reports in both the Gulf Times and Peninsula
newspapers and the recent random police checkpoints around Doha. If you
check the stories, they are all based on hearsay – internet reports (i.e.
from bored ex-pats and sport club aficionados) and not confirmed
interviews or statements from the police, MOI, etc. Several consuls from
western embassies, to include our own, met with the head of the traffic
police and several MOI officials on the traffic law and other issues a
couple of weeks ago. Someone raised this same issue, and while adamantly
re-affirming the zero tolerance policy, they also said that they are not
setting up roadblocks or purposely looking for DUIs. The random
checkpoints are primarily to check licenses and registration, mostly
commercial vehicles, as that’s a focus of the new traffic law. They
admitted that they had stopped a couple of people for DUIs, but that the
drivers were all obviously intoxicated and were driving very recklessly,
the same as someone who might be pulled over by an officer directing
traffic at a round-about, etc. There were consular staff from about 20
different embassies at this meeting, and none (U.S. included) had a
citizen deported for DUI. We do know a couple of repeat offenders too,
all of whom remain in Qatar, even if they have paid stiff fines or had
their licenses suspended.
Bottom line, however, being fined is an expectation with eventual
deportation a possibility. Folks should not drink and drive under any
circumstance. If you are going to drink then you need to car pool with a
non-drinking designated driver; use taxis; or plan on sleeping it off
where you last indulged.

Withnail's picture

Withnail said drink drivers? what about cell phone drivers? ...

A few years back in Canada I heard of a study that looked at people who talk on their phones.  It concluded that people on their phones were so distracted that the chance of them causing an accident was not far off the odds of a drunk causing an accident.

I was sitting in a bar with a few qataris last month, and the were having more than their fair share of drinks.  pretty sure they were driving home on their own.
