Arabs & Home lighting... :-/

svelte_saggi's picture

A question that has intrigued me since a looooooong time....why do Arabs light up their houses day-in and day-out????I have not seen a single Arab (note the word Arab...not Arabic speaking) home that does not have it's entire compund wall and outside lights fully lighted up all the time!I have posed this question to a lot of people and they have come up with many answers.Which do you think is the right one?And why do u think so?

1 - They get free electricity
2 - They just want to show off their fancy homes with fancy fountains et al
3 - They have a morbid fear of 'Jinns' or evil spirits which they believe can be warded off if they leave their lights on all the time
4 - They are just forgetful

Please do not generalize; I'm from Egypt, so in way I’m Arab, and we do not do that.
Generalizing a rule based on nationality is very wrong and only proves how ignorant you are; unless you ready did a search covering all Arab countries, which I really doubt.
Please try to be a little specific next time to avoid disturbing others
If you have any inquiry about Arab; I would gladly answer your questions. Other are welcome to ask and will try in my best effort to answer, hopping to clear some of the misunderstandings.

Whatever-7...please read my post once again.i have clearly mentioned that i am not talking about all arabic speaking people.my query was only with respect to GCC nationals...i.e.,UAE,Qatar,Bahrain,Kuwait,Saudi Arabia and Oman.so egypt clearly does not fall into that category.and the question is not explicitly posed against you.and regarding the part as to whether i have done a thorough study about arabs....my dear friend,i have lived in the middle east all my life and know about this region more than my own homeland.

Happy Happy...what's so "ungrounded and untruthful" about what i said???just take a drive to rayyan or gharaffa today evening and take a look at the plush arab houses in that area.u'll see for yourself what i have said is true.if haven't noticed it till now, that's not my problem.heck, why drive?even while travelling in an airplane at night, just look down when you pass over any country in the Middle east and u'll see small dotted lighted squares on the ground...marking house compounds.

heavens,i just asked a simple innocent question and people accuse me of blasphemy!where is this world going to? :-o

According to Wikipedia,Arabs are a Semitic people originating in Arabia, but today spread across most of Western Asia and North Africa, and many other parts of the world.so basically the true blue arabs are the people of the GCC.many other nations started to speak arabic after it replaced their regional languages.in case of egypt,it was after the Muslim Conquest of Egypt in 639AD (source:Wikipedia)

so technically speaking, egyptians are NOT 'arabs'....they speak arabic but are not 'arabs'.....

and i was speaking about 'arabs',please.

btw,we light up the front light of our porch every evening at sun-down and switch it off at dawn.that is quite normal.it's just having all lights on al around the house that seems queer

Jealousy is an emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, such as a relationship, friendship, or love

....just in case you didn't know the definition.coz if you knew,i don't understand why you would use it in this context.coz i find no reason whatsoever to be jealous of such silly things.i just queried if anybody knew the reason why they did this.i never said i have a problem with them doing it.let them put on all the lights in their home and in their neighbours' homes too if they want.i couldn't possibly care less.

and for the 6th (or is it 7th?) time,i repeat that by the word 'Arab',i meant only GCC nationals and not people belonging to nations that speak arabic.what other language do i have to explain myself now?heavens! x-(

Yes, but the current usage of the word Arab isn't usually about race. It's about culture.

We have many Qataris who's origin in from Iran, so they're mostly Persian, but have lived here for generation, they're Qataris, speak Arabic, and in the statistics, they are counted as Arabs.

The current meaning of "Arab" is somebody from a country that's a member of the Arab League.

The classifications of people used in the Arabic newspapers here are: Citizen, GCC National, Arab National, Asian, African, Foreigner.

Each of that halogen is approx 250 to 500W....so 30x250 = 7,500w....it would be brighter than a Film Set!

Al least their monthly bill must be sent to them so they know how much they are wasting.

But as bleu said if its just to provide light in the surroundings then its ok as it prevents theft...etc...but using big, energy consuming lamps just to show off is a real waste.

Now a days there are Solar Garden lamps or LED lamps that consume 1% of a normal lamps energy....they are a good replacement....
