I fought the landlord and the rent law won!
I posted about this last year - my landlord tried to increase the rent on the villa from QR8000 pm to QR16000. Landlord put this in writing as an eviction letter, also stating that otherwise if we don't pay the new amount he will use the property for his son who is getting married.
We took legal advice, started paying the rent through the court and won our case last week. I think the landlord's case was not very solid as he asked for increased rent or eviction and he had 7 other properties in a row beside out villa.
So, it is worth sticking up for your rights here and the legal system does not always favour local residents rather than expat residents. Seems that the rent laws are having some effect and that the judges are fair. Any one needing a lawyer can email me!
Shame my employer (government agency) is refusing to transfer my residency permit - but that's another story!

Crappy Cribs ...Well done Harley. Anyone have any views on how to get out of a lease? Four months ago I signed a two year lease on a brand new place. I really hate it now, the place is falling apart and I want out. I can break the lease by paying three months rent. Guess I will have to do that.

Rent rise cap set for pre-2005 contracts ...The Cabinet yesterday issued Decision No 9 of 2008, stipulating no increase in rents for two years for contracts in force from January 1, 2005 and setting down limits of increase for agreements signed before January 1, 2005.
The twin clauses of the new decision are as follows:
Clause 1
No increase in rents shall be permissible for contracts governed by the provisions of Law No 4 of 2008 and which are in force from January 1, 2005 or those signed after the implementation of the new law. Increase in rents shall be permissible only after the lapse of two years from the date of the implementation of this law in respect of these agreements unless otherwise stated.
Clause 2
The landlord may increase the rent in respect of agreements signed before 1.1.2005 as governed by the provisions of the Law No 4 of 2008.
The increase shall be as follows: 20% per annum increase for rents less than QR2,000 per month; 15% per annum for rents between QR2,000 and QR5,000 per month and 10% per annum for rents between QR5,000 and 10,000 and 5% per annum for rents above QR10,000.

i m not even a qatari ...i m not even a qatari national but i wonder...
where do u guys get this strange idea that the law is always siding with locals and not expatriates?
In my few brushes with the law, i have never felt that a qatari national is bieng given a prefferential treatment, and all the stories i have heard about expat/local court disputes were the locals were clearly wrong, the law was upheld regardless of nationalities.
It really is very disappointing and annoying for me , even though i m not qatari, that western expatriates in patricular have this " chip over their shoulders"
there is absolutely no evidence of the law bieng broken in favor of the locals, yet expatriates make it seem like such an abnormality that the law is actually upheld regardless of nationalities!!

Hussamf - perhaps ...Perhaps you are not fighting to keep your home, where many of us are and are and being clearly misused into the bargain. (see above post)
If you have brushed with the law that is something else, then you may be something like a gangster as people tend not to want brush with the law in my opinion.
It is not a chip on the shoulder when people want to save their homes and protect their liefstyle when Qatar has made a law for leasing that has so many loopholes it is like Swiss cheese.
You are living in denial if you think the law has not been broken - truth is many people have slipped through the holes but mostly agents are on the prowl to make a quick buck.

I went to Austin apartment locator who were the original real estate agents. The helped me filing a case and in the end the tenancy agreement won.

8k for a villa.... ...The rental was based on the market rate 5 years ago.....since the new rent law came in and we came under this our annual increases have been restricted to 10% per annum. Now we are paying 10,000 per month plus all maintenance and have 20 labourers in house next door and 15 security workers in house on other side - not pleasant. And, now the landlord has served notice to vacate (again) on the 15th Feb 2010 (without citing a reason)...when the current rent law expires....so, back to the lawyers and the court again.

That is so good. But to ...That is so good. But to avoid such things from happen you should have have a written tenancy agreement. If you have a legal tenancy agreements duly signed by the landlord and the tenant then that becomes a legal binding. Good step that you approached the court and kept paying the rent.
