Nanny drugs, rents out baby to beggars

svelte_saggi's picture

Bangalore: A nanny hired by a couple in India’s IT hub of Bangalore regularly drugged the seven-month-old baby in her care and rented him out for Rs100 a day, to be used by street beggars, the Times of India newspaper reported yesterday.

Early every morning, the couple used to dress their baby in the finest of clothes, keep fresh milk and eatables ready and leave the child in the hands of the nanny who was hired through an established agency.
But as soon as the couple left, the nanny used to mix sedatives in the milk and dress the kid in torn and dirty clothes, the report said.

For the entire day the drowsy child would be carried by a beggar on her shoulders and dropped back in the evening.

The nanny, in the meanwhile, used to spend her time watching television and eating all stuff left behind for the kid.

The couple were quite confused at finding their child inactive and drowsy all the time. He never used to play or create a ruckus, the report added.

One day the child’s mother found her baby missing when she returned home early from work at a multi-national firm, the report said. On questioning the maid, the later confessed to have been rented out the baby and assured her that the child would be returned by evening.
The mother was shocked to discover her child come back dressed in tattered and dirty clothes and being carried by an unknown woman whose job it was to beg daily.

Rising female employment and a preference for nuclear families in India means more children are being handed over to hired help for care when parents go off to work.
Sources say that Bangalore has a flourishing begging racket run by a mafia and the daily earnings run into a few lakhs. The mafia has divided Bangalore into zones and they send out the beggars. Each day agents take a huge pie of the earnings and give a few rupees to the beggars, mostly women. Sometimes, targets are fixed for the beggars and if they fail to `achieve’ the sales target, they are sacked. - Agencies

Svelte, I'm with you on that one. I don't trust anyone with my son, I'm already struggling to cut the cord for him to go to nursery soon.

But, some people have no choice but to have maids/nannies, which I totally respect too.

Reading all these kind of news make me feel sick.Everyday when I go home and see my kid running towards me makes me think "Is my job worth all this".Though she spends only 3 hrs with my maid(full time) after school we will never know when these maids will behave weird here.

I really pity that mother.May god bless the kid and the mom.Hope the kid is alright now.

With some, there isnt a choice. Like the working mother in this case. Theres an increasing number of families that rely on day care for their kids.
Some have good experiences some dont.
I'd hate to have this happen to anyone. Its a chance to take. Ive been in day care when I was young. That didnt matter to me as a child, I got to see my mom after work. Thats all that mattered then.

I'd prefer my child to be in a nursery rather than alone with a maid at home. There's usually more than one teacher in a nursery. Children can get hurt no matter where they are to be honest, my son sports a new bruise every week and he's with me all the time.

BTW - Any recommendations for a good nursery?
