Post-Lisbon EU needs a European Army
Not mine, but an idea floated buy the Italians...
Lord help us.. How do we integrate the Challenger tanks with the Italian ones that only have reverse gears ?
Italy is to push for the creation of a European Army after the "new Europe" takes shape at this week's crucial EU summit following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.
Franco Frattini, the Italian Foreign Minister, said that the Lisbon Treaty had established "that if some countries want to enter into reinforced co-operation between themselves they can do so". This was already the case with the euro and the Schengen accords on frontier-free travel, and could now be applied to "common European defence".
He warned that "if we do not find a common foreign policy, there is the risk that Europe will become irrelevant. We will be bypassed by the G2 of America and China, which is to say the Pacific axis, and the Atlantic axis will be forgotten. We need political will and commitment, otherwise the people of Europe will be disillusioned and disappointed. People expect a great deal of us. After Lisbon we have no more alibis".

European Army ...Why they need another European Army and for what?
Every European nation has their own Army, they still need to worry about is the Russians Mafia, the corruption, the gypsy's who gain EU citizenship's and the human and drug trafficking. Specially from Romania, Hungary and other Eastern States who are part of the EU.
The Italians need to focus in controlling the Mafia and corruption in their own turf and quit whining, About everything that goes wrong in their own state.

France and germany already ...France and germany already started this initiative back in the 1990s with the idea of forming a joint army brigade using common equipment.
However, this is taking things to the next step. I suppose the idea is that ALL europeans nations will be forced to participate.
It will be inteesting to see who would lead such an army ...

I believe that NATO has served its purpose and is no longer neccessary.

i think many would ...i think many would participate. The main problem would be the reporting structure and leadership positions.
It would be easier to have a brigade with battalions from participating nations within it. The leadership could be rotated periodically.

Could this work in a real ...Could this work in a real war situation? With squaddies talking 20 different languages (or however many it is now), how would they co-operate in the confusion of a battle?

Tell me something, How many Romanian gypsy's still living in Romania and how many had no real citizenship's rights or recognition before annexation to the EU.
Is it true, at one point gypsy's were consider a filth class citizen, due to their illegal criminal trade and habits?
Did they suffer great persecution and racism from the hands of regulars Romanians, Specially the police during the soviet era?
