"i am proud to be a Qatari" car sticker

baedaebok's picture

I hope this question doesn't blow up in my face.

I've noticed a few Land Cruisers have the back window sticker "i am proud to be a qatari" in English (without any accompanying Arabic sentence).  I'm glad they are proud.

Why do they say it in an English sticker?  Is it a plain expression of their pride in themselves (just to give an "English cuteness"?  Or, is it a reaction to what the think some English-speaking Westerns think of them (or maybe "shababs" in particular)?

I don't believe in the stereotypes because I've met some fine Qataris.   They have (1)  stopped to help me with changing a tyre, (2) they've invited me their weddings, and (3) bought me coffee just because they wanted to chat with me.

I think I shall sleep on it!

My first reaction was that the bumper sticker was in English 'cos the majority of people in Qatar speak English.  But it doesn't really explain why it isn't written also in Arabic .... hmmm

Mind you, the QatarLiving stickers which DaRuDe has for members of QL isn't in Arabic either anymore than 'baby on board' is, so .......

Maybe it's just purely because English is the most common language here amongst all the various Nationalities.

Nice to see you again on Friday, although I don't think we chatted - hope all turns out OK for you.

Niters for now :D

PM said I always hated the "Proud to be American" stickers ...

I couldn't understand why anybody needs their car to say that and who exactly would they be saying it to? People who aren't proud to be Americans?

But I'm a child of the 60s so I'm a bit counter-culture! Wink

PM,that is something i wonder about too, not only with americans though.I mean, how can you be proud of something you really had nothing to do with ?

You happen to be born in a particular place, you yourself, did nothing to accomplish that...

I feel one should be proud of what one has accomplished, not what happend by chance.

Oh, and "you" is meant in general.

lol I doubt that it's to be in a westerner's 'face'. Thats paranoia right there.

You go to China, Japan, or India and you'll see "I'm proud to be *insert word here*" English is the world's language

If I wanted to put a sticker I'd put it in English. No particular reason.

I think those stickers have no hidden meaning. Just something to stick for the sake of it.

It's like those people who have stickers which say "Honk if you love my spikey green hair and pink glasses". No reason except for fun.

Go to San Francisco and you will see hundreds of cars with Rainbow stickers.

I had to ask someone, What is the symbolism of the Rainbow on those car stickers?

The replied was:

They are proud to belong to the GAY community of San Francisco.

I started to laugh about it.

Just another fairy tale being adulterated.

Remind me not to look or dream for any kind  treasures in a rainbow.

Its more of a political thing...since there are many such stickers.

There seems to be somebody distributing this and telling "we are being sidelined by expatriates so we have to put this on to show our solidarity".

I just hope it doesnt grow into a wave of 'Political Conflicts" with the expatriates and spoil the placid life that is Qatar.

learn.n.earn said being proud of one's nation/country... ...

to me, it is quite a fine thing to be proud of one's nation/country.

reason to use it on stickers... it gives a feel of pride (in positive sense), it keeps one reminded all the time that they should act in a way to give a good impression about what they are proud of, and it gives them added respect as well. (these does not apply to those who dont care for others, and dont care for their own nation/country)

the reason to use english language in stickers, could be... mostly the stickers available are in english, locals know & understand that expatriates (most of them) are not able to communicate in arabic), locals have improved their english a lot recently and they dont mind using it in english... and yes, it could be that they want to mention it specifically to westerns for some specific reason.

When you're through changing, you're through.

If stickers on cars are illegal, where should we put our QL sticker?

Jauntie,  I've gotten back on my feet and am running up quite a sweat!  Thanks for asking.  I'm just waiting to hear back from the companies I interviewed with over the weekend.
