on being left-handed

ianmin's picture

i read here about the qatari culture/etiquette of not using the left hand to eat, hand over things, or shake hands. can somebody enlighten me further on this? i am left-handed, and would definitely find it hard using my right hand for most tasks.

thanks!

There is a lot of people who are left-handed. as long as you are not shaking hands with the left one, it's ok.

everyone will understand.

If you're looking for a problem, you're probably gonna find one.

well, left hand is considered cool and atleast I like them.

If only one eats with ur hands and uses ur right for eating and the left for cleaning ur behind... so the reason for not eating and liking left hand.

But i do not realy understand the logic.  God made all human beings equal and all parts of human are for a purpose.

I have seen people not taking money if u give them with ur laft hand...

Y dont these guys ampulate their left side completely, if it is so useless and shameful .???????

In this(arab/muslim) culture, shaking hands and giving gifts and eating is done with the right hand. Don't know about the reasons or logic for it(sorry) but it is okay if you are left handed. I guess else where hand shaking is done by right hand. for handing over things its not necessary to use your right hand until its a gift, I don't think people even notice while receiving any stuff whether its your left hand or right.

The rules are pretty simple.

Shake hands only with your right hand.  Easy.

Give and receive gifts and objects only with your right hand.  Maybe odd at first, but easy to remember in time.

If you're eating with cutlery in almost every circumstance it is fine to use cutlery with your left hand.  In restaurants it's fine, but in very old-fashioned traditional homes it is totally taboo even to use a fork or spoon with your left hand.  I can't use spoons and forks with my right, but it isn't a huge problem since it is very rare that this is an issue.

If you're eating with your hands, the left hand is fine for holding and tearing the bread, but avoid doing much more than that.  The hand that goes into your mouth should be the right hand.

When you pour coffee, hold the coffee pot with your left hand so that the hand holding the cup will be your right hand.

Eco-savvy said Its not Qatari /Arab but Islamic traditions ...

Muslims must  use right hand in everything we do  like eating, when shakin hands, serving food, stirring stew, switching lights

For you to eat with your left hand is not offending at all, be there and just enjoy
