INGREDIENTS
  • 1 quart vanilla ice cream
  • 3 cups crushed cornflakes cereal
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 quarts oil for frying
DIRECTIONS
  1. Scoop ice cream into 8 - 1/2 cup sized balls. Place on baking sheet and freeze until firm, about 1 hour.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine cornflakes and cinnamon. In another dish, beat egg whites until foamy. Roll ice cream balls in egg whites, then in cornflakes, covering ice cream completely. Repeat if necessary. Freeze again until firm, 3 hours.
  3. In deep fryer or large, heavy saucepan, heat oil to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  4. Using a basket or slotted spoon, fry ice cream balls 1 or 2 at a time, for 10 to 15 seconds, until golden. Drain quickly on paper towels and serve immediately.

Editor's Note

We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

Prepare Ingredients for Thai Fried Bananas.

Prepare ingredients.

Start with some ripe bananas and frozen spring-roll wrappers (the small ones are preferred). Allow wrappers to thaw for 5-10 minutes, then open packet and carefully separate 5-10 wrappers (or as many as you wish to make). Peel the same number of bananas.

Begin to wrap banana.

Place banana in centre of wrap.

Place a banana in the center of a wrapper. Grasp either side of wrapper and bring toward the center.

Bring sides of wrapper inward, then pull up bottom.

Wrap sides over banana and begin to roll.

After bringing in the sides, begin to roll by tucking the bottom end of wrapper over banana.

Tuck end under and continue to roll.

Tuck end under and continue to roll.
Tuck the end under banana and continue to roll.

Finish rolling banana and secure end with water.

Finish rolling and seal end.
Roll until banana is completely wrapped. Secure by dipping fingers in a little water and wetting the end to "seal" (like an envelope).

Fry bananas until golden brown.

Cook wrapped bananas in heated oil.

Carefully place wrapped bananas into about 1 inch heated cooking oil. The oil is hot enough when bubbles begin to rise from the bottom of pan. Or test by dipping end of wrapped banana in the oil - if it sizzles and begins to fry, it is ready. Note: do not overheat oil - maintain at a medium-high temperature (between 5 and 7 on the dial).

Remove from oil and drain.

Place cooked bananas on absorbent paper or towel.
Bananas are ready when they turn a golden brown. Remove from heat and place on a towel or absorbent paper.

Enjoy hot fried bananas plain, or
with chocolate sauce and ice cream.

Enjoy fried bananas while still hot. For an extra special dessert, top with warm chocolate sauce and cold vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Now hand a fork to your partner and get ready to fall head over heels in love!
