Visiting Malaysia

learn.n.earn's picture

One of my friend is planning to visit malaysia and he needs some information/help from some Malaysian.

1- If he stays there for two weeks, how much it will cost him for accommodation, food and bit of travelling (mostly in KL areas). Is there any help available for saving some money for hotel rents?

2- What is the best "purchase" from Malaysian market?

3- Is English easily understood by locals there?

Thank you for your advice & help.

Regards

Try the hotel above.

Best purchase, depend what your friend like i guess. We normally come to KL for the food.

English would be widely understand by nearly everyone in KL, dont have to worry much in that department.

prima_donna said Hi learn.n.earn, ...

Accommodation in KL ranges from 5* hotel chains to cosy backpackers lodge like the GreenHut (RM50 a night and in town centre) to sleazy cheap rundown motels (don't go there). A standard tourist accommodation of 3*-4* will set you back RM200 - RM300 a night.

To get around, it's best to use the red and white local taxis (starts at RM2) and insist on them using metres. Some will try to scam off tourists by quoting very inflated fares. But cheaper options will be the bus (not recommended as can get quite confusing for 1st timers) and the LRT/underground/subway (recommended).

Food is cheap and plentiful from stall hawkers selling local dishes to the ubiquitous fast food chains like McD and KFC. One average local meal at local restaurant costs less than RM10. Most shopping malls have large food courts selling great variety of cuisines at reasonable prices (RM10-RM30 a meal).

But if this is your friend's 1st visit to Msia, it's best to get a good guidebook like Lonely Planet or research the forum on Malaysia at Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g293951-Malaysia.html).

All the best!

I find KL a good touristic destination. You can survive there with almost any budget.

Yet, it is not a shopping destination. Except for the China Town and surroundings. You have to bargain.

You can have a good meal for a low as 10 Ringets. I did enjoy roasted ducks thereCool

OPS. Am afraid am angering my Indonesian friends.

Personally, did not find difficulty in communicating with the people there.

1.  About RM300 per night for accommodation should be adequate. (QR1=RM0.85).

2.   The best "purchase" in the Malaysian market???... Experience our diversity in cultures... it's something money can't buy.

3.  Being a member of the British Commonwealth and a former colony of the British Empire for more than 200 years, yes, you'd have no problems coomunicating in English.

Welcome to Malaysia....
