Triple8 said Cultural Shock ...

I am the spouse of an expatriate here.  We are from Singapore.  We have travelled alot but never worked or stayed overseas. Since our children are grown, we accepted an overseas posted job and here we are in Doha, Qatar.

Wow, the first thing I notice in this country is discrimination. I saw in one supermarket, the packer at the cashier is always in a disappearing act, when an asian turn to have their purchase packed he disappeared but when its a local  or whites turn , he will appear from nowhere to pack the purchase items ha ha ha.

Cashiers here are always so unfriendly and most of the time they scanned our purchase items and then tossed it towards the packer, they just dont know how to put it towards packer instead of tossing it away.  Some of these cashiers behave as though they own the supermarket and is forced to do the job ha ha ha.  But then there are some minority chasiers here who are really nice people.  The majority need to be trained I supposed.  There are many more shocks here but I have learned to accept it.

Such things dont happen in Singapore thats why I am rather shock at first but I am used to it now, well when you are Rome Do What the Romans Do.

We do like it here because it is a Muslim country and as a practicing Muslim there are many convenient ways to practice our religion whereas in our home country we do face restrictions.

Well one should be grateful of whatever is given to us by the Almighty.  Shukur Allhamdullilah.

We have faced this kind of cultural shocks many times. my experience was with an asian guy in home centre . He acted as such he is the manager of the showroom , where i got mad and yelled at him.. Finally, after 4 years of living in doha, Got used to it now..its like what u said when ur in rome behave like a roman.. never mind them....

Yeah ,this happens in places like FFC , where the packer disappears when people he knows will not tip him come to the counter, when he disappears.

i noticed in the UK , they pack for everyone and the cashier tells everyone , hello , how are you today , its a nice day etcc..,

When will the staff at our supermarkets learn such good behaviour ?

Do you think it is because the customers are not courteous to them as well ?

May be if we show them what we expect of them , they will behave as we want them to behave.
