If you have any questions you would like to ask an professional interior designer or architect just ASK ...

This is one query

Question:  I am considering using wall paper - can you advise?

Ans:

Wall-covering optionWALL PAPER

There are many types of wallpaper and the criteria for choice should include the function of the room and its aesthetics.  Of-course budget too.  Wallpaper could be cheaper than paint and then again could be very expensive, depending on the quality.  I would suggest going for manufacturers of repute and following manufacturer’s instructions for hanging and maintaining the wallpaper.  It is also important, especially here in Doha, to consider the extreme temperatures.  If you go on summer holidays and close up you AC and home for months – the heat and humidity may do some damage.  So make sure to ask your supplier about this and maintenance techniques.

Wallpaper types include – paper, paper/plastic combination, vinyl and then the more expensive fragile hand-made, hand-painted types, exotic fabrics, flocks and textured grass cloths.

For hanging wallpaper you need to consider the surface you are going to cover and then you may need to use;

  • Sizing paste – necessary to prepare the surface and seal it and provide a bonding underlay for the wallpaper.
  • The appropriate adhesive.
  • Lining/backing – if needed.

The number of rolls depends on the size of the room – length, width and height;  and the dimensions of the rolls.  The number of rolls is also affected by the size of the print and the pattern because joining the seams needs to be precise.  It is always a good idea to buy more because wastage will occur as the paper is cut and seams joined.

Using the services of a professional is advisable as they can help you in the choice of wallpaper as well as the number of rolls you would need of the particular type you choose.

TIP:  please go the extra mile and choose eco-friendly wallpaper and accessories.  Keep in mind that indoor pollution that results from interior finishings affects your health and is one of the main causes of allergies.  Also know that some synthetic materials continue to produce toxic gases into your interior spaces.  You could choose to use wall-paper made from natural materials (eco-friendly raw materials and manufacturing processes), natural dyes and colours and opt for lignin as the adhesive.

studying for a masters in interior design means you already have a first degree in a design area? As for the country, I really cant say - Italy, UK, France, USA, Canada.... However I know that you can try for a diploma or BA in interior design by correspondence in the UK..consult the British Council and they will give you a list of accredited institutions.

What do you think are my best options in painting my house. I am already considering hiring a local Austin painter but I still want to check some "need to know" things before making this step. Thanks!

Hi,
The specialty areas that involve interior designers are limited only by the imagination and are continually growing and changing. With the increase in the aging population, an increased focus has been placed on developing solutions to improve the living environment of the elderly population, which takes into account health and accessibility issues that can affect the design. Awareness of the ability of interior spaces to create positive changes in people's lives is increasing, so interior design is also becoming relevant to this type of advocacy.

omeima said painting your home ...

Hello. sorry for the delayed response. However if you havent already painted your home I would like to respond to your query.

I have seen the Austin painter website, but I am not familiar with them at all. But there is some good advise for you on their site - basically interview the painter, speak to their previous clients and even see some of their work. It would be better if you would sign a contract and read it well in order to protect your rights in case of fautly work.

Generally, the professional will investigate the state of the existing paint and the wall itself - there may be faults with the actual wall surface that need attention first before applying the new paint. You may need (and is perhaps better) to strip all the layers of the existing paint first. the painter will help you in the choice of the new paint product - and it is best to follow the manufacturers instructions completely.

I would advise using environmental friendly paint - because it is best for your health - chemical paint will continue to give off toxic gases (VOC) during the years. Read this article under PAINT: http://dzyneden.blog...
