Civilian work in Iraq

baedaebok's picture

Has anyone worked in Iraq as a civilian?  What was it like (day-to-day)?  Are you glad you did it?  Did you survive (mentally & physically)?  Did you come back a changed person (for the good or bad)?

I'm looking and the money is fantastic.

Swissgirl39, I should've studied French more in public school.

Novita77, why?  It'll be a good chance to feel like "Job".  I need to toughen up and become stronger mentally.  I should have joined the Canadian Forces when I was in middle school....but I didn't like the shouting.

I lived in Riyadh in 2003.  That wasn't as extreme as daily Iraq life but it is a preview.  I can live with that.

Who wants to come with me?  Maybe we start "Iraq Living" website.

Baedibok...not to spook you, but I think shouting will be the last of your worries.....

Btw...were you bombed in Saudi?

Which compound did you live on?

I tried to go to Iraq a few year back and the wife went ballistic. Pay was at about 21,000 USD a month doing static security for... a company.

Sigh I would hae gone, but I probably would have been divorced too.

in Kuwait some years back and met a South African working for the same construction company.

He said he was flying home that night. I askd if he was going on leave to which he replied no, he was going home with a body (construction guy killed in a drive-by shooting).

That's why the salaries are so high. As someone else said, shouting is the least of your worries.

One of our neighbours in Turkey was in Iraq and considered it too dangerous. He has now opted for an easier location Helmund province in Afhganistan. He says it's much safer than Iraq.

This is what I would say to my husband if he was interested in taking a job in Iraq:

No place is safe there and when I say that, I don't mean in terms of safety compared to the rest of the world.  Of course there is risk living anywhere but some places have a higher risk than others.  The calculated risk in Iraq is very high because the probability of something occurring is moderate to high and the consequences when something does happen are severe.

Just check the news, the supposedly safe Green Zone has been attacked by rockets recently with deaths in the civilian sector.  Also the risk of kidnapping is high as well.  Sometimes money is just not worth it when you compare it to what you could lose and what your family could lose.  Do you think they would rather have you or a bank account full of money earned at the risk of your life.  You need to consider everyone who would be affected by your decision and what that effect will be in the short term (stress of worrying while you are there) and long term (living without you should the unimagineable happen).
