41 New Hotels Set to Open in Qatar in 2010

qatari's picture

Doha, February 07 (QNA) - A total of 4,689 new hotel rooms are expected to be added to the Qatari hospitality market during this year, the latest data by the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has revealed. Forty one new hotels will be operational by the end of 2010, the agency said, according to the Peninsula newspaper. Last year the number of available hotel rooms in the country increased by 25 percent compared to the previous year. Officials said this year looked to be even stronger because of the delays some projects faced due to liquidity pressures of the global financial crisis. "The global economic crisis has taken its toll on the world tourism sector," Ahmed Abdullah Al Nuaimi, QTA chairman, told the paper. "A thriving hotel industry is a key component for any country’s tourism sector." According to the data the total number of three-star hotel rooms in Qatar rose from 964 in 2008 to 1,084 in 2009. During the same time the number of four-star rooms also increased from 2,155 to 2,760, and the number of five-star grew from 3,056 to 4,059. However, the QTA said hotel occupancy rates fell by 6.3 percent last year compared to 2008, and the revenues earned by four and five-star hotels fell by QR33m and QR10m respectively. (QNA)

See how many high figures murdered in Dubai...few to name here:
1) Murder of a well known Indian Businessman
2) Murder of a Labanese signer
3) Murder of a Chachen leader
4) Murder of a Hamas Leader

beside these everyday several crimes are happening in Dubai. WHY?

Also we must not forget why today Dubai falls into trouble because they started to suck public blood thru pay parking system all over the city in commercial and as well as in residential areas, salik tax, unnecessary increase in airport tax, traffic registration charges were doubled,... etc..
In short the BOOM in Dubai made the life of expatriates and Locals difficult to survive due to which the crime ratio increased.

We don't want to see Doha going same way else they will face the same situation.

What we need is good road network, more amusement parks for families, shopping center for Bachelors ;-)

Doha is so backward.. build capacity for hundreds of thousands of guests in luxury hotels, yet forget the key ingredient: any attraction whatsoever to this place!!

Why oh why would anyone come visit Doha, aside from the very few and far between sporting events held here? You would think they would build something to draw tourism here first, but instead build all these luxury hotels and accommodations with hardly a soul on earth (outside the GCC) that could tell you where Qatar, let alone Doha, was on a map.

Sporting facilities that the youngsters and expatriates can access. Like in place of the 8 km shopping mall have sports utilities...basketball courts, tennis or badminton courts that those from the lower income can utilise. That way these poor guys have something to occupy their time. They are getting kicked out from the high end malls so give them something to vent out frustrations....libraries or even small reading rooms...
a lot of colleges get the youth involved in philanthropic activities. these poor souls drive around and show off in their fancy cars cos they are bored to death. their hormones are raging & can be harnessed in a good way to give back to society.

- Not necessarily, if they sort out the enforcement issues. That's what needs organization and greater efficiency / response time. To this end, actually the exit permits are a help although some people can buy multiple exit permits.

Henderbeast's picture

Henderbeast said My concern about hotel ...

My concern about hotel capacity in Qatar has been the surplus of top end accommodation at the expense of mid range accommodation. It’ll be interesting to see the relationship between hotel ownership and the hotel licensing authorities to find out why the numbers of five star hotels continues to increase, despite their low occupancy rates, while mid range accommodation cannot break into the local market. One wonders how these businesses survive, other than by catering for the needs of nationals and residents through corporate functions, restaurants and bars.

In my experience most hotel occupancy is generated through business travel as most tourists visiting the country are here to visit friends or family and will stay with them. High spending tourists will not come here due to the well-documented lack of tourist attractions and competition from better equipped locations elsewhere. Mid range accommodation geared towards the business traveler, who would not normally require the additional features that top end accommodation offer, would doubtless thrive if given the opportunity and I’m sure most of business traveler (or, specifically, their companies) would prefer to stay there if they had the choice.

If the country develops a more realistic hotel strategy it will result in sustainable business and employment and free up more money to spend on amenities for nationals and residents alike, including the provision of quality corporate function facilities, restaurants and bars that don’t have to subsidize their unnecessary accommodation brethren.

There are so many hotels nowadays that it's getting difficult to decide which one to choose for your vacation. I'm looking for hotels in Harrisburg PA now because I want to visit an old friend and I need a place to stay for a few days. I hope to find one that I like. Last time when I went on vacation I didn't like my hotel at all. They had very bad service. I searched better this time and I'm sure it's going to be a pleasant trip.
