Best agency to go through to get Housekeeper/Nanny?

Supernurse's picture

I'm hoping to sponsor the above, so I'll be going through an agency. Given up on the ad in the gulf times! Anyone let me know which agency is the best??Thanx in advance!!!

I think they are all pretty much the same. You just have to make sure that the girls you ask for is the girl you get and you also have a chance to send her back if she is not doing the job properly.

Try getting in touch with Jassim Services - 4422306.  Dealing with them was hassle-free.

1) If you are looking for and english speaking one make sure her english is audible.

2) Look for one that may have worked in Saudi they know the ropes and know the Gulf.

3) Don't know what nationality you are looking for but Malaysian and Indonisian are very good and very good with kids too, I would advise against Philippina because they have a lobby here and they are argumentative, many working as maids have gone to univeristy and have not really worked as maids before, also if you are not home you never know who is coming into your house (I am not pedjudice just have experience with them as maids).

4) The agencies have catalogues and photos of maids but it would also be advisable to speak to the maid on the telephone so you know about her english.

5) Organise and plan her free time as it looks as if you need a full time live in maid - male a daily plan and make sure she sticks to it,- remember if you treat them well you will reap the benifits.

6) My friends have a maid from an agency here - she works mostly all day until about 7 pm but has time to rest in the afternoon as do most of the family.

7) Often you will have to show them how to operate washing machine, vacuum cleaner etc. as many have not seen these machines before.

Hope this helps you!!!

baedaebok said Canarybird spoke for me so ...

Canarybird spoke for me so I won't repeat.  Her post covered most of what I want to say.  Birds of a feather flock together.

I used Manpower Agency (behind the KFC at Immigration R/A).  I wouldn't bother phoning them b'c they never answered the phone when I called them.  They had a good selection of housemaids but we ended up with a housemaid who doesn't speak any English.  We went there several days but none of the Indonesian housemaids in the catalogue spoke English.

We have found the greatest difficulty with our housemaid:  getting her to do regular household duties.  These are the duties we expect her to do without use telling her every time (mopping/sweeping floor; chaning garbage cans when full (and replacing garbage bag); washing, drying, putting away clothes (separate colours); putting away dd's toys/books; tidy house (without putting things away in unexpected places); and cook.  She's OK with doing things that we tell her to do at the moment but she seems to "forget" to do the habitual duties.

Supernurse's picture

Supernurse said O no! One of our ...

O no! One of our stipulations is that she must speak a fair amount of English, well thats the main stipulation. Can I ask if all indonesian housemaids are mainly muslim?

baedaebok's picture

baedaebok said It takes extra effort ...

All Indonesian housemaids are Muslim.  We never saw any in the catalogues who weren't Muslim.  Philipinas tend to put down Christian as their religion.   We're Christians and we're raising dd as a Christian. But we've had no conflicts.  The housemad keeps her religon to herself (praying 5 times in her own room, etc.) and we keep ours to ourselves.

If you absoltely need English, it'll be tough finding an Indonesian housemaid.  We never saw any.  We thought a younger housemaid (20-something) was better (more flexible).  (BTW, this wasn't just MY idea but it was both dw and me!  Laughing).

Language, I honestly think, isn't a problem if you invest the time in bringing your housemaid up to speed (in language).  After 4 months, our housemaid speaks/understand enough English to get by.

But this all depends on your family.  We can live with minimal communications.  This is partially because dw and my native tongue are different (Korean and English) so we're used to putting extra effort into communicating.

mmm interesting....What about ethiopian housemaids/nannies?

baedaebok's picture

baedaebok said Maid's backgrounds ...

Supernurse...We saw mostly Christians in the Ethiopian housemaid catalogue.   We would have gone with an Ethopian housemaid except dd would probably be more comfortable with another Asian face (her mom, mom's friends, grandmom, etc. are all Asian).

Novita77...Really?  Medan or Ambon?  That's really helpful.  If we move to Saudi Arabia and can't bring our present housemaid, we'll have to hire another one...this time we'll be on the lookout for ones from Medan or Ambon.  Are these islands or areas of Indonesia?  Are these areas known for "exporting" housemaids?  Also, is it possible to tell if a housemaid is Christian or Buddhist?  Would she state this fact on the phone?

Would like to get my Indonesian maid with me a couple of months after we move to Doha. Will we still have to pay agency fees and if so how much. Also, what is the average salary of an indonesian maid?

Thanks

mariam-mar said But in my opinion, somenoe ...

But in my opinion, somenoe has to be lucky to find a good one, it never depends from the Agency, the good thing for the agency is you can return them back if not good, but they replace it and keep trying. I got one maid from the one near the Immigration, and she is the best, she do the job without telling it everyday, i just tell or teach her to do once and presto, i have nothing to say she knows her duty. She is a Filipina, and i hope all maids are like her. So the best thing to do is to compliment her for giving her some extra things like giving her perfume, some creams, some new clothes, letting her call on the phone for her family once a month will be fine.

There are more than 'Jassim' agency.

As long as you stay away from (JASSIM Decoration & Services Co.) , we had bad experience with them.

we asked for a maid / nanny to look after our two babies, only for the maid to refuse to baby-sit after 7 days from arrival to Doha!

JASSIM Decoration & Services Co. is still refusing to fully refund us!

I arrive from Australia in less than 2 weeks and will only have a 2 bed apartment, so won't be able to take in a live in. Does anyone see that as a problem? Also, what are the going rates for a nanny?

Okay, though i have employed housmaids in past and still do, i beleive it would be better if the practice is stopped completely.

The cruel treatment meted out to maids by "few sponsors" is hardly any problem.

The social problems caused by thopusands of women who have left their families in native countries is THE REAL PROBLEM.

Their kids have suffered, some kids run away from home, lots of kids live with aunts/uncles/grandparents who don't traet them well. Some horrible men have molested their own daughters while their wives were abroad.

Superdoc yes its very difficult for families to be away from each other but some have no choice, its about survival. Also many maids are single and come to work here to save money for a house or studies.

The issue is the sponsorship laws and how some sponsors seem to think they own the maids, the laws need to change to protect the maids from such people.

Korly's picture

Korly said So Britexpat, Superdoc ...

what you are saying, is stop the labour of having maids/nannies in your homes, and basically put half of Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, not to mention domestic workers in South Africa and other countries out of work?

Hmmm... great solution.

Whats the difference, someone working in your home to keep it going while you work in an office for your boss?

In some instances, people treat their maids better than their own boss treats them.

Our Indonesian housemaid loves her job and loves playing with dd. She's a twentysomething single lady who can't read or write (even in her own language) so she has few options other than "unskilled" labour (housemaid, construction, factory, etc.). She has no husband to provide for her. Back home in West Java, she has no blower, water, and maybe electricity (I'm not sure!)

It is true that it is "trying" having two women in my home at once (dw and the housemaid). This is especially true when the housemaid wears a short skirt or tight shirt, or bends over to pick something up. Once she wore this low-cut shirt that showe cleavage (not that I was looking!). When dw saw that, dw went nuts and told her to change her shirt.

As I've mentioned, I've got an Indonesian housemaid. I can't stop praising Indonesians for their hard work, humble attitude, and good heart. They come from a conservative country where people live decent lives and work hard....they don't want to party a lot.

I'm just kiddin' about the talk about having an attractive housemaid (even though she is). As other QLers know, I like to say provocative things.
