Drive Doha - Dubai by Road

trancetrip's picture

I would like drive down in my own car to Dubai by road. As far as the map says we have to transit through Saudi Arabia to reach UAE. I have the following questions

how long does the drive take?

what is the quality of the roads?

how safe is it to drive down like that?

Any specific visa / immigration / border crossing formalities for an expat and specially for an indian passport holder?

With Emirates and QA fares /-a-t-/ ridiculous rates for a frequent traveller who loves driving this might be a good idea.

Pool in your ideas on any information that might help. Thanks !

I have travelled to Abu Dhabi at least 5 times. It takes approx. 7 hours to reach Dubai. The roads are good and the journey is safe.

You need a Saudi transit visa & a UAE visit visa.

Search the forum and u will find a lot of information on this subject (search for 'Saudi transit')

PM me if you require further info.

I have gone through the same procedures, first enter saudi arabia then to the UAE border...

Personally, the saudi border takes almost no time. But the UAE border takes hell of a time, retina scan and other procedures....This for me took at least an hour and a half. Let aside the long lines you have to stand in....

The roads of saudi are okay one way'd. UAE Roads are AWESOME you will see the difference in theirs and ours.

The drive is 8hrs long....(>120km/hrs). It is pretty safe.... With petrol staions alongside every major highway.

Petrol cheap in Saudi arabia (cheaper than Qatar!!!) (25/ltr) BUT in emerates its expensive.

Be sure to check your tyre pressure before beginning your journey, and don't forget to put car shampo on the front bonnet or else the sand will scrap the paint off....

Wish you a safe and enjoyable journey,....

I just did this trip a couple of days back and my guess is that it really depends on the driver and the sanity of his/ her mind. I like to drive fast, so travelling to Dubai and back was an adrenalin rush which I will surely repeat.

Depending on your nationality you will have to obtain a transit visa which is about QR100 per person. There are plenty of visa offices around but you can try by calling the one I used (5308111). No single women allowed to enter KSI so either a male family member or husband must tag along. When you will apply for the visa they will also ask you to bring along the car registration which must be in your name.

The drive to Salwa (Qatar - Saudi crossing) is short (95km) and plenty of speed-traps along the route. On the Qatari side they will ask you first for  car registration and then for passports. Aside from the slow process (it took us 30 minutes on a Thursday afternoon) it is hassle-free and very modern.

On the Saudi side all female passengers have to go to a "Women Check Room" for whatever reason?! My wife (although being a European) covered herself with foresight and had no trouble at all. After passport control there is again the car registration check, followed by customs and insurance premium (QR70). You must make sure that you complete all 4 steps otherwise you'll go back as we did. The entire process took us 1 1/2 hours as they are REALLY relaxed but friendly.

After the boarder (3-4km) there is a left turn towards the UAE. Road is great, no fuel stations and no speed-traps until you reach the UAE. Fuel your car on the Saudi side...it's dirt cheap!!!

UAE-Saudi boarder is easy however will you have to park the car. After you exit Saudi, go to the passport office, complete the eye scan, immigration form, passport control, car registration, UAE road insurance (QR250) and off you go. The drive to Abu Dhabi is long but again there are no speed traps until you reach the perimeters of the capital.

Along your route, beware of the many trucks...they partially barge out into the left lane without pre-warning or indicator.

When you reach Abu Dhabi you follow the signs for Al Waqba which will take you straight to Dubai.

All in all it took us 7:30 hrs from Doha to Dubai. On our way back it was Sunday and the roads were empty. 5:25 hrs door to door and the distance is exactely 710 km. Step on it! ;-)

PS. I was asked to pay insurance again when re-entering Saudi but when I asked "where" his reply was "OK no problem..."?!?! My guess - no need.
