Drive Doha - Dubai by Road

trancetrip's picture
Posted in:

I would like drive down in my own car to Dubai by road. As far as the map says we have to transit through Saudi Arabia to reach UAE. I have the following questions

how long does the drive take?

what is the quality of the roads?

how safe is it to drive down like that?

Any specific visa / immigration / border crossing formalities for an expat and specially for an indian passport holder?

With Emirates and QA fares /-a-t-/ ridiculous rates for a frequent traveller who loves driving this might be a good idea.

Pool in your ideas on any information that might help. Thanks !

shadab121 said Student can get on arrival ...

Student can get on arrival visa on UAE Boarder if not accompanied by parents. Just get your fathers residential permit copy.

From Qatar boarder to Saudi Boarder everything will be done in max 15 min (I have visited qatar from saudi 10 times in last 2 years, didn't take more than 15 to 20 min.)

Road in Saudi are new and Excellent but only four laned compared to Qatar 8 laned roads. No speed limit in Saudi but try to keep your speed under 160 KM/hrs. From Saudi to Uae boarder and formalities it may take upto 30 min cause you have to step down for visa and eye scan in uae which take upto 15 min. DHS 100 for 10 days insurance in UAE and 105 DHS for entry visa & 35 DHS for some exit tax.

If you want to go to dammam from qatar boarder follow the sign board to dammam its a straight road. Roads are four laned till you reach the outskirts of Hofuf. When you reach the outskirts of hofuf you will get an exit to dammam, its a new road and 6 laned. You will be avoiding the city. this road is almost 50 kms and when you complete this road you will be diverted directly to hofuf dammam road which is 8 laned road.

kiterpilot said beware ...

I recently tried this journey but had a hell of a time. All in all I spent 34 hours total, had the contents of my car inspected by 25 different "officials", had to sleep by the side of the car at the UAE border and had to return to Doha in the end!

I was traveling on an Aussie passport, had the Saudi Transit permit visa, but the problem was a small balsa-wood radio control model airplane in the back of my car.

I thought I was heading to Dubai to visit friends and enjoy our hobby together, and then return home to Doha, but apparently I was heading into the UAE to take over their skies and bomb the cities.

Beware of what you have in your car as some people in this region don't seem to have a lot of common sense and what might seem innocent to you might appear threatening and sinister to them.

xxc said well, I took the road to ...

well, I took the road to dubai twice. The road is good. In KSA there is only 1 old petrol station so you have to make sure you stop to refill your gas tank. There are some moving radar police car in KSA. One you are in Abu Dhabi you can drive up to 180km/hour eventhough all signs says 100 or 120 kph but you will see people flying by your side. Once you are in dubai, 120 is the maximum speed. the trip takes 5 to 6 hours at worst case unless you will driving just 100 all the way. While going to Dubai, the road is so clear and nice and no traffic, no trucks BUT take care while coming back and make sure you drive back in day light because on the way back to qatar you will find an endless line of trucks coming to qatar and you ll be driving beside this line and sometimes 1 truck jumps in front of u to overtake the others and it takes him ages to clear the road for you. Last, do not forget to paint your car with the special sand spray to protect your car paint from scratches and dings. drive safe and enjoy the trip ... oh! you need to submitt your passport to the saudi embassy to take 24 hours transit visa in order to enter KSA.

chinugee said Need bank NOC with the gurantor ...

There is new rule for the vehicle that is under the loan. If we are travelling outside qatar by road, we need a NOC letter from Bank mentioning to Qatar Traffic Police. If your bank is IBQ, we required a bank gurantor to get the NOC. I went recently to Saudi (Makkah-Jeddah-Madeena-Riyadh) by car. When I approach IBQ, they said to get the NOC the minimum days are 5 working days. So I got exactly 4 working days from IBQ bank. If you are travelling the peak time of Umrah( ramadan -Hajj time) you should submit the visa paper atleast 15 days before.
So Plan 20 days before everything and adjust the same in your company holidays. And ask the good and reliable Saudi Transit agents. Ask them, how many days will take to get the saudi transit visa. It is very important to know in peak time.

hi. i am planning to do a road trip to dubai this coming dsf 2013.

will the border police have a problem if you bring any shopping goods from dubai?

i was planning to shop the following from there becuase they have very good deals there:

LED tv 40"
hi-fi audio system
some furniture in ikea.
some perfumes

the deals here in qatar are almost none so i still think dubai is better in that sense. plus i was hoping i could do it with a road trip.

u think it will work?

your family left in 2006 so their visa has been cancelled for sure. because visa it gets cancel by default for being out of the country for more than 6 months.

Yes you can visit for DSF.
you dont have to show hotel bookings.
you need to get a permission from your bank where you have took your car loan in order to driver out from the country using your car.
even if its under your name since its car loan then your car its mortgaged to your bank till you finish your payments.
