Rude gestures
By Shamiri on Sat, 12/04/2008 - 10:57pm
Hi,
I am trying to find out what exactly the problem is with rude gestures in Qatar. Sure, flipping someone the bird is plain rude. But that is all it is. It is not an attack on someone's culture, religion, colour or creed.
So what is SO bad about it that everyone warns you could get locked up over it? Is there a specific meaning behind it for Qataris/Muslims? Is it more rude if you do it left handed?
This is not meant to attack anyone, I am genuinely puzzled by this.

ummm I believe it means ...ummm I believe it means something a little worse than just F you.... from what I have been told it means someone along the lines of sticking the finger up the [Let's not get blocked by the Telco]. Dont know how true this is, but was told this by a Qatari...

It's extremely offensive ...to many many people. Doesn't matter if they're Qatari, Indian, Phillipino, American or martian. Don't do it.

Yes, but that does not answer my question ... ...I am trying to find out WHY. Yes, it is rude and offensive to most people. Why is it offensive to the point of being locked up here?
To me it seems as if it is ok for Qatari's to be rude to any other nationality, but when people are rude to them they cannot accept it.
This is not meant to start a public flame war. If you think I have the wrong idea, rather send a private message than posting in the public forum.

It takes every amount of ...It takes every amount of restraint and discipline to refrain from using gestures here, especially on the road..needs patience, patience and more patience...

True .... ...Hehehe, yes I know ... sigh. I have been here 6 months and always restrained myself. Unfortunately, yesterday I slipped up. So I'm trying to figure how much trouble I'm going to be in hmmmmm.
