Pets in Doha
By zsday on Wed, 11/01/2006 - 7:50am
My husband and I have an opportunity to move to Doha for a job. I wanted to get some feedback from any one who has moved to Doha and brought their pet(s) with them. Most importantly if this is allowed and if so, what were the requirements (considering this is a country decision versus an employer's). Any feedback is appreciated. Also, a question to natives, I wanted to know if Qatar is a pet-friendly country. Thank you very much.

Dear Zsday, As long as I ...Dear Zsday,
As long as I know there is no any problem to bring your pets with you cause I saw so many expatriates here with their pets and also there are some few vets available.
Welcome to Qatar,
Ayman

You can generally bring in ...You can generally bring in pets although you will need to have all the vaccinations, and a letter from your employer saying its ok and a vets certificate saying animal in good health.
Some big dogs have been known to be rejected but mostly it should be fine. There are alsatians here etc.
As a general rule it is not very pet friendly. Locals tend to dislike dogs and in my experience are not very nice to them (our dogs were often chased and kicked and had stones thrown at them).

Thank you both Ayman and ...Thank you both Ayman and Super7 for your comments. I really appreciate the feedback. A question for Super7, once your pets arrived in Qatar, how long did your dog(s) stay in quarantine before you could bring them home with you? And if you know where I can get information regarding customs for pets, etc, I would appreciate it too.
Thank you so much! Our dog is like our child and I couldn't imagine not bringing him with us. He is a sweet, gentle soul but a bit on the large size, so this concerns me. He is a chocolate lab - beautiful too!
Thanks

No quarantine in Qatar so ...No quarantine in Qatar so they come straight through. Just the other way around (i.e. if you ever take them to the UK) you have to do the 6 months quarantine even if you have a pet passport as they don't recognise Qatar in the scheme
I very much doubt it will be a problem bringing him.

Just a thought relative to ...Just a thought relative to taking animals into Qatar. Don't forget that you are only here until a national can undertake your job. You will enentually have to re-export your animal to your base country. If you are in the UK then it's expensive and time consuming.
We have taken two sets of cats through the quarantine process in the UK and it is indeed an intricate procedure.
We estimate that currently it would cost in the region of £1,000 to take a pet cat back to the UK. This is inclusive of air-tickets, licenced transport to the Quarantine facilities, additional rabies shots (UK will not recognise them if they are given in Qatar even though the UK authorities insist that they receive them in Qatar), plus the cost of the 6 months quarantine.

ZSDay, have you relocated to ...ZSDay, have you relocated to Qatar yet?
I will hopefully be there by August, and I plan on bringing my one German Shepherd with me.
I have queried whether there are any dog training clubs around Doha. If there aren't would you be interested in maybe getting together and starting something like that? It would be a fun way of meeting new people of different cultures, as pets seem to have a way of bringing people together......

We brought our German ...We brought our German shepherd mix from the states without much trouble (besides issues with the airlines that is). We did use a local service to handle the paperwork ahead of time. I think the Marhaba (welcome guide for western expatriates) provides information on these services. We were also able to take him home straightaway from the airport.

Hello zsday, I brought my ...Hello zsday,
I brought my dogs 2 years ago to Doha. I have 1 chocolate and 2 black Labs. They needed all their vaccinations, a Live Stock Import Permission from the Ministry Of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture. We had no problems but Doha isn't very pet friendly. There are some who likes dogs but most of them don't, often, because they're scared - especially of big dogs. A lot of people asked me if I would sell one of mine, but I would never do that - not for 1 million Euro's. They do a lot of dog fights here. I had a litter of 7 puppies here and I tried to find good homes for them. It wasn't easy and I did the best I could. Maybe you will see some of my puppies here, I had 4 chocolate and 3 black ones. We're leaving Doha in three weeks and I'm happy for my dogs - and for me! I think they changed the rules if you want to go back to the UK. Look at this homepage: http://www.defra.gov...
We needed a rabies blood test to go back to Germany. They take the blood not earlier than 30 days after the last vaccination and you have to wait another 120 days before travelling - and no quarantine!
I hope you have a good time!

It's always nice to get together with people who have similar hobbies.....
I am also a dog trainer, so it will be nice to have someone to swop ideas with and also maybe get together and maybe start some kind of club for others with the same hobby.
Thanks Smartie.....

Too bad we won't be able to meet, because we're leaving in three weeks. Maybe you can send me a mail and I will send you name and phone number of the other dog trainer. Write to 'smartiepants/-a-t-/breakthru.com'.
Bye for now!

to samie 1571 ...actually i have tons of pets ( 2 cats,3 dogs,
a goldfish, and 3 hamsters) and the dogs are
practically taller than i am. i was just looking
for a little variety. and it's not really important
to me what the dog looks like it's just i already
have the same or similiar type of dogs they have
at qaws and i just wanted a little change.
so please don't try and judge before you know me.
and i'm not looking for just a chuhuahua, any
type of small dogs. thanx.

What is wrong with people who bring their dog here and leave without them. It's not the dog's fault and they can't buy their own plane ticket home!

NO VW if you read the post ...NO VW if you read the post it says on the notice board in the VETS! People should not have the dog if they are not going to take them with them you would not leave your child here so why not the dog???

a sad day indeed ...Sammie...Its a sad day when you start comparing dogs to children. I think thats one of the most insulting things Ive ever heard.
Sorry sammie if this comes accross as judgemental but I think its because we come from different spheres of thinking.
Super7 said
why is that insulting ...why is that insulting bajesus? her point was that you should love a dog like a family member and take it with you when you leave as you would a family member.
I don't agree with her but I know many who do.
bajesus said
super ...I just cant find it concievable to consider a dog a family member. But I think my point of view is spurred from the islamic stance on dogs. Add that with my irrational phobia of dogs and there u have it.
VW said
bajesus ...Your stance on dogs is known and obvious. Do you need to continue to troll in threads that you obviously have no interest in?
bajesus said
VW ...Ill troll on as much as i want in every thread if i wanted to. Thats whats great about this site....I COULDNT CARE LESS what u think.
PS Its not MY stance

bajesus, I have had to leave ...bajesus,
I have had to leave my baby at home in South Africa till I can afford to bring him here in a few months..... My baby is a 35kg German Shepherd that thinks he's human.... sometimes.... more human than I realise....
Anex has been there for me in the past year more than anyone else I can think of..... he doesn't talk, nor does he realise that he is my rock and I feel very lost without him here.....
I work for the Qatar Tribune newspaper that is launchin on Sunday... keep a look out for some articles I have written about dogs.....
I realise your dislike for dogs is because of your religion, but maybe if you got to know them as loving pets, you might change your views....
Take care
Lucielle
PS, there is a saying..... The more I know of man.... the more I love my dog..... this is more true than you realise.....
bajesus said
Xena ...Im looking forward to the launching of this newspaper and reading ur articles. How long has this been in the making. Is it gonna compete with other local english newspapers here?
Regarding my dislike again i have to stress that its not only because of my religion but because ive had 2 severe anxiety attacks from close enounters with dogs. My phobia is so bad im often embarassed to talk about it and to tell u the truth its sumthing most Qatari's can identify with. The worry has increased because lately there have been a lot of reports of stray dogs running loose in neighbourhoods here. However, i really dont mind ppl with pet dogs just as long as theyre miles away from me so as not to suffer from anymore anxiety attacks. Again, cant wait to read ur articles.
Xena said
Dogs and Qatar Tribune ...bajesus, apologies, I do recall reading about your fear of dogs due to your experiences.....
When Anex arrives, i would love to meet with you and have some kind of introductory session with you two.... I think it would help you a bit with your phobia.
I have been training dogs for over 10 year now, and with the knowledge I learnt from my ex-husband, I have a fair amount if information I can give you regarding dog behaviour.
What will happen the day you do encounter one of the strays you talk about? How will you react? If you run, rest assured he will run after you.... you are after all moving prey.... but if you stand dead still and not make any eye contact with him, he will in all probability leave you alone.....
There is much to learn about the pshycy of our four-legged friends.... and once you have realised what wonderful creatures they truly are, you will wonder how you could ever have had negative thoughts about them.
With regards to the newspaper, we have had staff in Qatar for about three months setting up the paper. Of course we are hoping it will be competition to the other newspapers, what would be the point otherwise.
To all on QL, please feel free to mail me your thoughts about Qatar Tribune when it's released, as it is only when we listen to our readers that we can improve if it's not up to scratch.

Xena ...Thx and looking forward to getting intouch with you to help me overcome my phobia. Ill probably start with baby steps but dont expect much progress quickly. Im afraid its going to be a painfully slow process as I think im one of the most difficult, resistant cases you'll come accross. I hope its a puppy cuz if its one of those big ones then rest assured ill be running like my life depended on it, that is, if i dont faint first.
Im looking forward to it getting released and hype surrounding it cause the english newspapers available here suck if u dont mind me saying so! Oh and be sure to make it colorful and funny. I think weve had enough of miserable news.

qt ...Best of luck to QT. if you're reporting, then may spot you at a press conference or two!
You guys have been pretty hush-hush about waht's going on. An A+ for secrecy!

hehehehe, bejesus, I love ...hehehehe, bejesus, I love your sense of humour...."I will probably faint first,"......
Well then, will make sure there is a huge pillow on the ground near you, k..... he's a big boy..... 35kg's big...... but once you are out cold... you won't even realise that he has plonked himself down on top of you and is licking you awake..... he will be saying that you must please wake up so you can play..... "what fun, someone on the ground with me...... " he has a brilliant personality.....
Oh, and killerbee, does that mean you are a reporter if you spend so much time at press conferences?
And you are right... we do keep secrets well, so keep you eyes peeled and your ears open..... QT is emerging.....

New Home for two Golden Retrievers ...I have two golden retrievers (brother and sister), Baska and Beauty, who are nearly 5 years old. I will be moving to Australasia at the end of the month and unfortunately, I will not be abled to take the dogs with me as the regulations for importing dogs into New Zealand is so time-consuming. As such, I need to find them a good home. Anybody interested, I can be contacted on 5508036.

Be very careful. Golden ...Be very careful. Golden retreivers are very trendy at the moment (you only have to look at the latest saluki x stray pups). You will have no trouble finding someone to take them but as you know, they need excercise and training. If your not very careful they will end up in an apartment, never get walked, then the owner will say that they are too noisy and take them to QAWS (best case) or to the vets (worst case). It happens every day.
