Salary ranges in Qatar

Dear everybody
I would like to open this forum to discuss one important issue that is to be salray ranges in Qatar. Evaluting any employment offer can be much easier if we have done a research of slary range for a ceratin position which may help us to know wether or not it is a fair offer. Therfore, I would like to ask about the availability of sources that tells us about different amount of salries for diffrent positions. Personally, I woud like to know the salary of an architect or urban planner and also for a head of planning unit in Qatar.
Thanking you in dvance.

Dalila, it all depends on ...Dalila, it all depends on where these jobs are and the type of contract you have. Oil and gas companies pay higher than average and they dont usually distinguish between nationalities. However, the private sector does depend on nationality.
To give you some idea of the possible range for an engineer let me cite an example.
Civil engineer indian national working in private sector on a permenant type contract.... expect a salary not exceeding 6000-10000 QAR all inclusive.
Civil engineer european national working on oil and gas project, fixed term contract (3-4 years)..... expect $500-$700 per day.
So you can see there are alot of factors which contribute. Could you give more details then maybe myself or others could probably give a more accurate figure.
eg... type of organisation, type of contract, your nationality, years of experience, any middle east experience etc etc.
sorry if i confused u even more.

Hi Dalila Did you mean that ...Hi Dalila
Did you mean that everyone could post here with hteir Job, nationality, years of experience and so on and then their salary in order to make a kind of database on Qatar salaries? I agree that such a thing could be useful when one needs to negotiate a contract. But I don't know if some "bad" consequenses also might come from it. I usually only tell my salary on request to my closest firends. Many times it causes more friction than benefit.
I work as a contractor for QatarGas in the field of IT consulting. More specific, I work with a system called SAP and I do security and authorizations and segregation of duties.
If someone is in a similar area they are welcome to contact me and we can continue the conversation in private.

well i am an assistant prsonnel manager and there is salaries range from 1000 to 50,000
and it really depends on the nationality, Europians and american first, then Lebanese in the second place, and then the rest of the nationalities, this is genrally speaking, and there are execptions of course

** You will be offered a base salary equal or equivalent to what you might have earned in your own country of origin **
The difference is supposed to be a tax advantage if you can sort out your fiscal status with your own country. All of the above comments are true, when it comes to different continents, nationalities and salaries.
The bottom line is: your 'Gross Income' will be about the same as in your country of origin.
If you are presently employed, and you will be paying taxes to your country of origin if you moved, then there is no point in moving to Doha.
If you are unemployed and looking for a job and this is a good kick- start for you, then you have a point in coming to Doha.
People have reasons other than money for moving to Doha. Younger people would look for an advancement in their careers, for a different challenge, etc. Baby-boomers, will look for end an of career adventure, the mega nature of projects, a place in the sun, a last hurra...?

Hi, this is for ...Hi, this is for Barburro.
Teachers earn around 400 - 500 QR per day on a casual basis (much less than casual rates at home for me), but the rate depends on the school you work for. A full time teacher starts on around 10,000+ QR per month (with 10 years teaching experience) with the wage increasing each year.
I know a lot of teacher friends who are on 15- 16,000 per month plus benefits (they have been here a while!). Once again the amount depends on the school you work for. Some pay better than others.
There is definitely the need for Western english speaking teachers here, and as you would be hired as local hire (no benefits) you would be an attractive canditate to most schools. I would just send my CV out to the schools or better still, visit the schools in person with your CV. I know many of the schools are recruiting now for next year.
Good Luck!

It depends who you are working with. Qatar may be a small country but they don't have uniform (state) salary scales covering all industries and disciplines.
As has been indicated on other threads on the site, the cash salary is only a portion of the deal.
You must also consider such as medical care, housing, amount of annual leave, provision of social facilities and other benefits.
You must consider the package as a whole.

I've been offered a job at the University, it seems quite a good package (16000 QR a month) plus a villa, healthcare, and a travel allowance. However we don't know if its enough money for us to come out and live comfortably until my husband finds work too. Also I don't drive and wondered what the cost of a local driver to get me, say to and from work, would be per month (I stayed in lebanon and Syria before and it was fairly cheap and more practical than taxis there)?
Any suggestions would be very welcome, Thanks

Ujang, When you say Senior ...Ujang,
When you say Senior Position, there are at least 9 levels of "Senior Position" in such as QP. Housing Allowances in QP are established by reference to the job grade but will vary by company (outside QP). With rents increasing as they are doing, allowances really need to be reviewed on a regular basis. Transportation really needs to be enough for you to make the repayments on a car loan. Education allowance will probably depend on your nationality and the fees of your particular nationality school. Certainly in QP they will not pay for you to send your children to a European school if you are (say) Indian but will cover the bulk of the fees for your children attending an Indian school.
Most of the schools in Qatar have web sites and will probably indicate school fees. Sorry I am unable to be more specific.

I don'think that there is a Singaporean school in Qatar but am not sure. On the other issues I leave it to someone else to respond. Having spent 17 years (in total) in Qatar, I am no longer "in residence". I left in 2004 since when rents have increased dramatically. My daughter left last year after 23 years (having been raised there) and has confirmed that prices of everything are on the increase.
Regarding the school, you can only try. Within QP each case was considered on it's own merits. I know that if no school of the employees nationality was available, employees were able to send their children to any school of their choice.

If that is the deal then things have definitely improved. When I left the housing allowance was QR 6,500 a month. The Western allowance maybe the Western Inducement Allowance (one of my legacies) has increased substantially if the total allowances are QR16,000. I assume that you will be working outside of Doha to receive the location allowance.
One downside of the large allowance is that your end of service benefit (ESB) will be based on the basic salary.
Alternatively the deal may include your ESB if you are on what they call a special contract.

I didn't want to challenge your decision for accepting 16K,cuz you seemed to be decided to go even if it's the only income of your family for now (excluding your hubby), but, with a PhD and everything, are you comfortable with the offering? Is that comparable to what you would have earned in the UK for gross income? May be it has to do with very low number of hours/week of teaching? How many hours per week would you eventually teach?

Hi Moudir, Yes those teacher ...Hi Moudir,
Yes those teacher who are on 15-16,000 per month went in at the top of the salary scale at the school, which is 10 year experience- starting salary anywhere from 10,000-13,000 per month. They then worked their way up to 15 000 per month over the years they spent working at that particular school. They have been teaching in Doha at the same school for 6-8 years. So that is why their salary is so good.
When I started, I went in on nearly 12,000 per month (no masters).
They also receive more for their Masters or PhD, but once again this depends on the school. The school I was working at only brought that in a about 2 years ago.
The salary amount is given every month including holidays.
Most of the International schools have TESL attached to the school, as a lot of the students are Arabic. The school I worked at was nearly 90% ESL.
A lot of the schools are happy to hire people without their degree in Education and without a teaching certification too. As long as someone has a degree and maybe some sort of teaching experience you can usually find a job in an International school. (So parents out there, be warned! :) )
Hope this is helpful.

Thanx Mish for the ...Thanx Mish for the clarifications.
It seemed to me that 16K was not a lot of money for any Ph.D, but i didn't want to hurt Lachalla's feelings. Cuz in my book, if you're not doubling (x2) your home net income, there is no point in relocating? unless of course it's a second income (in the family) and you can compromise a bit on the allowances. I think my wife would like to aim at teaching older kids, pre-university, first year U or last year junior college (if there is such a thing over there), cuz that's where her experience has been in the last decade; teaching older kids how to write correctly.. teaching me was the hardest part of course, to bring up my English from the fourth language level, to the second language level.

Hi Moudir and Mish this is ...Hi Moudir and Mish
this is all helpful! Moudir, that's sweet, I really don't know if 16k is a lot or not. Point is we live in London. My salary is about the same but from that we have to pay a huge mortagage and very expensive living - going to Qatar means we can rent out the house (and make some money) and my husn=band can complete his accountancy thingy. On top of all that I like the Middle East (although haven't lived in Qatar before..)
Our hope is that my husn=band finds some business work quickly=, we save a little, we spend our long holidays in Italy, and generally have a better quality of life. But, of course, we may be being idealistic...
Is 16k a month plus all expenses really terrible? Is it very expensive there? Are we being naive? I've felt very reassured by all the other mails I've had...

In the meantime, i invite you to read my Blog (My first encounter...) as a teacher grading an essay in creative writing (2nd language level of course). Everything i was told is true, all my replies were my thoughts at that moment combined with the fruits of my imagination. I'm aiming for a B+, but will i get it...

Most expatriates seem to look for other opertunities once they get to QU. Better jobs are at the American Univ in Education City or CNA. To feel like you have a good deal, both people need to work, 15k/16k is not going to go far if you have to buy a car, food is expensive, living cost are not cheap because everything is going up on a monthly basis.

To put Lachalla and Akal's ...To put Lachalla and Akal's mind at rest.
We are not doubling our income from Aus and we are still better off here than Aus as we don't pay taxes. We can have a great standard of living (that we couldn't have in Aus) and enjoy a great family life.
We live on 15,000 QR a month, once housing is taken out. I am not working at the moment, as I am enjoying being a stay at home mum to my first child.
We have a very expensive full time maid that we hired before I became pregnant and have decided to keep her on- she is very good. She lives out and we sponser her, so she is more expensive than a live in maid. We also have 2 cars, one we are paying off.
We do not save much each month, but we manage to pay our mortgage repayments in Australia plus extra, eat out when we choose to, and save a bit for holidays.
We find Qatar's living expensives to be very good when comparing to Sydney Australia. Meat which is mainly from Aus or NZ is about the same price as home. Fruit and vegetables are more expensive, although there are many local products available that are excellent and cheaper than Aus (especially the yummy cucumbers).
Disposable nappies are very cheap here and clothing prices are fantastic during the sales. It all depends on where you shop. If you go to the expat supermarkets and only buy the produce you are used too, it will be expensive. As you get to know Doha you will work out where to get the bargains.
We also attend Music lessons, swimming lessons and playgroup each week. So, we are not staying at home to save money! We go out often and have fun.
I think it all depends on where you are coming from. We lived in Germany before coming to Doha and find things are much cheaper here and the quality of food much better. I am sure you will find it much cheaper here than London!
Hope this puts your mind at rest.

I am now waiting for a letter they have said they will send after a little time with a list of required documentation etc. I have been told I would teach (at most) 12 hours a week and have up top 10 office hours (which can also be used for research). Perhaps you could send a mail to your H of D asking if they've made a decision? I would if I hadn't heard. Let me know how you go, and good luck!

All we hope to save away is our mortagage payments as we will have a tenant in our house so it all looks good. In any case with a bit of luck my husband will find some work either before or once we're there ( he is going to finish his accountacy qualification too so if he doesn't so be it). Our only real expense will be buying a car (but my employer gives us an interest free loan for that)

They are offering me QR28,000 month with some allowances. The housing allowance is in the range of QR6500 - QR8000 depending on my salary grade (which I'm not particularly sure what it is at the moment) and utilities allowance. I'll be on family status so I will be bringing my wife and kids as well (She will have to leave her SAP work). I know that the company will assist in my kids education but I'm not sure if they will fully support the tuition fees. I've been reading the forums and noticed that everyone is complaining about the rent here in Doha. Is QR8000 adequate? I'd appreciate some feedback as I have another competing offer from Saudi Aramco. Aramco gives better perks and their package seems more structured. It is permamanet. the offer is 15000 base plus allowances. Since it is permanent I do not want to regret it a few years from now, knowing the inflation is high in Qatar.

That's not too bad. What ...That's not too bad. What grade are they offering you as this will determined your housing allowance. The only problem I see in Doha is the accomodation, what you don't want to happen is you having to dip into your base salary to top-up for your accomodation. QP's housing allowance I'm told ranges from QR9000 to QR12000 if you're on family status (it's half the amount if you're on single status). Try your luck and see if they are willing to nego on your base salary.

anayeb, if you're on that ...anayeb, if you're on that grade, then the housing allowance is QR6500 with a supplementary allowance (due to the current high rental rates in Doha) of another QR2500 (so total of QR9000) which should get you a comfortable apartment (ask Ayman - he's the man with the magic crystal ball for accomodation in Doha :) )
That'll help you when you negotiate. I'd advise you to get their confirmation on the housing allowance (especially the supplementary amount).

Moudir, I definately agree ...Moudir, I definately agree with you that this site is far too slow. It's partly due to the forum architecture. If the administrator really wants to upgrade this site into a full fledged (awesome) forum; and believe me it does have that potential then the more techie people here should, together with the original maker of this site should set up a team......admin, moderator etc. The best (and I can vouch for it) forum software is vBulletin Version 3.5.3, powered by Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. If you want to see how large and complex a site can become, visit www.expat.ru
It has become my number one source of information whilst in Moscow, and it is truly and awesome site.
Food for thought admin???

Hi Azraeil, I have also been ...Hi Azraeil,
I have also been given a QP contract on the same grade as Anayeb. Mine however is a definite period contract and not permanent. As you correctly mentioned QR 6,500/- is quoted in the contract as housing allowance after probation. How do I get to know if a supplementary housing allowance is provided as nothing about it is mentioned in the contract? I have already got my entry visa. Any help you can provide is highly appreciated. Thanks.
Regards

Hi all, i'm looking for ...Hi all,
i'm looking for salary info about Art Directors and Professional Photographers (with 5 to 7 years experience) working in advertising agencies in Qatar.
Is 11K good for Art Director (house included)
and 14.5K for Professional Photographer (house included)? taking into consideration that we'll have to leave our country and live in Qatar?
Thanks in advance for your help :)

bvv75, I got some info from ...bvv75, I got some info from collegues who worked in QP about the supplementary housing allowance. I then confirmed it with QP HR. Yes, it's not in the contract so you'd better get some written answer on the supplementary allowance (mine was in an email).
As for transfers, QP doesn't pay you much. They will give you a lump sump amount (which frankly is pretty darn pathethic) and that's about it.
If you're on definite contract (most likely 3 years), then you get 30 days annual leave and 3x base pay for your car loan (the 5x base pay car loan is for indefinite employee). Furniture allowance is still 45000 so nothing's changed much since 4 years ago as mentioned by novita
Aramco is offering me USD8,000 a month net, with USD21,000 signing-on bonus not to mention USD12,000 annual bonus. Housing is fully furnished for USD500 nominal rent with free utilities. It's an indefinite term as compared to QP's definite term. The money is just too good to pass up with Aramco. I'll be making my decision by the end of next week, the money pull is too strong.

Hi Everyone, I am scheduled ...Hi Everyone,
I am scheduled ot move in to Doha on 01 May from Bombay India. My wife currently works as a branch manager for a leading bank here. We would like for her to continue working is as much similar level as possible. Jobs in banks seem to be awfully few in Doha and for sponsored candidates - only junior levels - is this right? Can some one advise if it would be better for her to travel with me and then look for a job or resign and take the plunge and then work it out?

Hi Akal, Congratulations, ...Hi Akal,
Congratulations, are you getting 28K plus somewhere to live? If so sounds great! Be careful I heard that sometimes they give an allowance instead of a villa/flat. Their HR web site says that staff can get an interest free car loan. Have a look.
This week they sent me lots of paperwork - contracts, list of furniture, etc, all quite helpful, yours will probably arrive shortly.
