Barack Obama
Obama's U-Turn
By verisimilitude on Sun, 15/11/2009 - 10:59pmObama defends abuse photos U-turn
The release of more photos of prisoner abuse by US soldiers is "of no benefit" and may inflame opinion against the US, President Barack Obama has said.
The pictures were not "sensational" and every case of abuse had been dealt with by the military, with action taken where appropriate, he said.
The White House previously said it would not fight a court ruling ordering the release of the pictures.
US civil liberties activists accused Mr Obama of adopting Bush-era policies.
The pictures were due to be released by 28 May, according to the court order.

Qatari Al-Qaeda link sentenced to prison
By PM on Fri, 30/10/2009 - 2:57amBy CAM SIMPSON
WASHINGTON -- A Qatari man who admitted working with the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks received a lighter prison sentence than the government sought after a federal judge cited the government's decision to jail the al Qaeda operative without charge for almost six years.
Ali al-Marri, 44, was eligible for a term of up to 15 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines, but received only an eight-year sentence from U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm, of Peoria, Ill. Judge Mihm dropped 71 months from the sentence, because that's how long President George W. Bush kept the former Bradley University graduate student in isolation at a U.S. Navy brig in South Carolina.

Obama quietly signs $7.5bn Pakistan aid bill
By Barq on Fri, 16/10/2009 - 11:53amObama quietly signs $7.5bn Pakistan aid bill
Reuters/Washington
US President Barack Obama quietly signed yesterday a $7.5bn aid bill for Pakistan that drew criticism in the nuclear-armed South Asian country because of conditions linked to the funds.
Obama signed the bill behind closed doors at the White House without a public ceremony before leaving on a trip to New Orleans. The law provides $7.5bn in non-military assistance to Pakistan over five years.
Pakistan’s military had complained because the legislation ties some funds to fighting militants and is seen by critics as violating sovereignty.

The Nobel Committee hailed Obama’s extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples. Citing his work to rid the world of nuclear weapons and peace efforts made to bring peace and stability in the Mideast, Mr Obama was chosen ahead of the likes of Morgan Tsvangirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, who had been a favorite for the award.
