Typhoon Santi, which was earlier forecast to directly hit Metro Manila and four other provinces in southern Luzon, veered slightly southward on Friday night in the direction of Bicol and Southern Tagalog regions on Saturday even as Metro Manila remains threatened.

According to the 10:45 p.m. weather bulletin by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Santi was last spotted 30 kms north of Daet, Camarines Norte, moving west southwest at 20 kph.

Asked if Metro Manila remained along Santi's path, Pagasa administrator Dr. Prisco Nilo said that although there was still that possibility, the more likely scenario is that the center of typhoon Santi would pass south of Manila.

Tropical depression "Ondoy" intensified into a storm Friday afternoon as it moved closer to Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In its 5 p.m. advisory, Pagasa said at least four areas were placed under Storm Signal No. 2. These are the provinces of Catanduanes, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur, and Polillo Island in Quezon.

If elections were held today, in a five-cornered presidential contest, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, fight will win hands down with 50 per cent of the votes, according to a survey conducted by the Social Weather Station last Sept. 5 and 6 in the vote-rich region of the National Capital Region, Pangasinan, Central Luzon and the Calabarzon.

The survey, done after Sen. Mar Roxas withdrew from the presidential race and before Aquino declared his presidential bid showed Aquino getting 50 percent of the votes followed by Sen. Manuel Villar with 14 per cent, former President Estrada with 13 per cent, Sen. Francis Escudero with 12 per cent and Vice President Noli de Castro with 7 per cent.

Single mother Maritess Paloma had a simple dream in mind when she left home to work in Taiwan in June 2008 - to save enough money to buy a house in the northern Philippine province of Bulacan.
The dream crumbled when less than five months later, she was laid off from her job at a Taiwan semiconductor factory.
“Our supervisors told us that there were really no more orders coming in so they had to let us go,” she said. “My world almost collapsed then. I asked a friend in Taiwan to help me find new work, but she also lost her job.”
“There was nothing more I could do there so I went back home in November 2008,” she said.
