Alas poor Josh, Urdu’s great son
By mathboy on Mon, 24/08/2009 - 4:38pmAn international Urdu Conference in Islamabad last week played Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark.
This will be considered an exaggeration by those who approach Urdu from their respective regions. Urdu, a language created in the subcontinent, did pick up flavours from the Deccan, Punjab, Delhi, and so on. I may, therefore,be forgiven my own parochialism: my childhood was shaped in a zone of great cultural energy over the last 150 years, Awadh, with Lucknow as its capital.

Ibn-e-Insha
By mathboy on Fri, 07/08/2009 - 11:45pmI heard someone raising a question " Ibn Insha is a great writer and poet. Will somebody tell me why his writings are humorous while poems are 'Udass'"
Ibn-e-Insha is one of the best--a writer of great elegance and charm. He maintains his uniqueness in both prose and poetry. Urdu language is fortunate to have writers/humorists like A.S. Patras Bukhari, Dr Shafiq-ur-Rahman, Ibn-e-Insha and Mushtaq Ahmed Yousefi. No doubt that all of them are wonderful and at the same time distinctively different.

A beautiful ghazal by Bekhud Dehlvi
By mathboy on Wed, 17/06/2009 - 6:58pmShama'a-e-mazar thi, na koi sogwar tha
tum jis peh ro rahay thay, yeh kis ka mazar tha
tarpon ga umar bhar dil-e-marhoom kay leyay
kambakhat, na-murad, larakpan ka yaar tha
soudayay ishq aur hay, wehshat kuch aur shay
majnoon ka koi dost fasana-negar tha
jadu hay ya talisam tumhari zuban main
tum jhoot keh rahay thay, mujhay a'itbaar tha
kia kia hamaray sajdoon ke ruswayeaan huyeen
naqash-e-qadm kisi ka sar-e-rah guzar tha
iss waqat tak tu waza' main aaya nahe hay farq

Mir Taqi Mir
By mathboy on Mon, 18/05/2009 - 4:40pmQadr rakhti na thi mata'a-e-dil
saray a'alam main main dheka laya
Mir's poetry is one of its own kind, a perfect and unique blend of elements of tragedy, love and mysticism, that no other Urdu poet (his contemporaries and others) could exhibit. Some of his asha'ar..
sarapay pe jis jah nazr kejayay
tamam umar waheen basr kejayay
khilna kam kam kali nay seekha hay
uss ke aankhoon ke neem-khawabi se
Nazke uss ke lab ke kia kehyay
phankari ek gulab ke se hay
When Mir is musical his every word contains 'soz' and 'saz' in it. See..
Gul ko hota saba qarar ay kaash
rehti ek aadh din bahar ay kaash
be-ajl Mir ab marna para
ishq kartay na ikhtiyar ay kaash

Mirza Ghalib - Guzergah-e-khayal Urdu Forum
By mathboy on Sat, 11/04/2009 - 10:44pmMirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib is the most remarkable and greatest poet of Urdu and Persian ever born in the history of Indian sub-continent. His pen-name is Ghalib which means dominant. And he is still dominant. Ghalib is synonymous with genius when it comes to poetry.
Dr Iqbal wrote about him 'nutaq ku soo naaz hain teray lab-e-ejaz per'. I have started this thread to share the poetry of this greatest poet. I fortunately found on internet some ghazlas of Mirza with very good English translation. I thought I should put them here. It might give some idea of Ghalib's poetry to non-native speakers of Urdu.
Ishq Mujhko Nahin, Vehshat Hi Sahi
Meri Vehshat Teri Shohrat Hi Sahi
Katta Keeje Na Taalluk Hamse
Kuch Nahin Hai To Adavat Hi Sahi
Mere Hone Mein Hai Kya Rusvayee

Being a Teacher... - Guzergah-e-khayal Group
By mathboy on Fri, 03/04/2009 - 3:51pmTeaching is the most noble profession. I personally place teachers even higher than the medical practitioners. Medical experts save lives but teachers are the guardians of civilization. They impart a civilized attitude to their pupil and the society. This is what the 'meseehaye' is. They inspire their students with a sense of the intellectual delights obtained from new understanding of knowledge. With the help of teachers great intellectual giants are spawned who contribute in setting up the just and progressive societies. Teachers' contribution is unlimited to the proliferation of knowledge. Looking at what they do, teaching should be extremely challenging and a great responsibility.
