Qatari Al-Qaeda link sentenced to prison
By PM on Fri, 30/10/2009 - 2:57amBy CAM SIMPSON
WASHINGTON -- A Qatari man who admitted working with the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks received a lighter prison sentence than the government sought after a federal judge cited the government's decision to jail the al Qaeda operative without charge for almost six years.
Ali al-Marri, 44, was eligible for a term of up to 15 years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines, but received only an eight-year sentence from U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm, of Peoria, Ill. Judge Mihm dropped 71 months from the sentence, because that's how long President George W. Bush kept the former Bradley University graduate student in isolation at a U.S. Navy brig in South Carolina.

Muntazer al-Zaidi freed from jail
By abcd on Tue, 15/09/2009 - 3:09pmAFP News
Released on - Tuesday,15 September , 2009 -11:27 14
Muntazer al-Zaidi, the Iraqi television reporter jailed for throwing his shoes at former US president George W. Bush, was finally freed on Tuesday, ending a nine-month stint in prison.
Zaidi has been behind bars ever since he shouted "it is the farewell kiss, you dog," at Bush on December 14 last year, seconds before hurling his size-10s at the man who ordered Iraq be invaded and occupied six and a half years ago.
"He was released and now he is waiting to collect his possessions," the reporter's brother Uday told AFP amid jubilant family and friends who were preparing a party at their home in Baghdad.

what do you think?
By malpaso on Wed, 26/08/2009 - 8:27pmU.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday that officials in the administration of his predecessor, George W. Bush, could potentially face prosecution for writing legal memos authorizing the CIA to use harsh interrogation methods on terrorism suspects.
Speaking for the first time since ordering the release of the secret legal briefs last week, Obama said the United States lost its "moral bearings" with use of the controversial tactics, which have been widely condemned by human rights groups and legal observers as torture.
With the release of the memos, the president ruled out prosecuting CIA officials who performed the harsh interrogations, provided they followed the guidelines set by government superiors who held that such practices were legal at the time.
Obamas get healthy fare from Filipina chef
By LAMBORJEEPNEY on Tue, 25/08/2009 - 2:12pmMANILA, Philippines - For the White House chef, serving homegrown vegetables straight from the garden is just like preparing food in her native Philippines – healthy and simple.
Filipino-American Cristeta Pasia-Comerford, the first woman and first minority to serve as the executive chef in the White House, credited the first lady for making sure her family eats steamed, organic vegetables from the garden Michelle Obama planted in April.
“Mrs. Obama is a very hands-on person when it comes... to knowing healthy meals for the family,” Comerford told a news conference Monday in Manila.
She is one of three to be honored this year by the Bank of the Philippine Islands as an outstanding Filipino overseas. The honor will be formally awarded today.
Blockbuster Read: Cheney to sling mud /-a-t-/ Bush

By Barton Gellman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, August 13, 2009In his first few months after leaving office, former vice president Richard B. Cheney threw himself into public combat against the "far left" agenda of the new commander in chief. More private reflections, as his memoir takes shape in slashing longhand on legal pads, have opened a second front against Cheney's White House partner of eight years, George W. Bush.
Obama Joker poster denounced as racist..
By britexpat on Wed, 05/08/2009 - 11:16amA poster depicting President Barack Obama as Heath Ledger's "Joker" character from "The Dark Knight" has sparked controversy after it appeared on the streets of Los Angeles.
The poster shows the US president with white face paint, dark eye shadow and smudged red lipstick above the caption "socialism", in an apparent attack on the US president's efforts to reform health care and stimulus spending.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, denounced the image and called on those behind it to reveal themselves. "Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery.

YES WE COULD? - Oblablabla = Bush - 57%
By Funiculus Umbil... on Sat, 18/07/2009 - 11:41amFinally, reality. The state of euphoria about having 'THE NEW MESSIAH' in the White-House has finally come to an end.
Americans finally realized that Oblablabla is not Superman and that he will not be able to fulfill all his campaign promises and that at the end of the day Oblablabla is, whether he likes it or not, just another politician that has promised mountains and will deliver what the corporations, or actual rulers of the kleptocracy, allow him to deliver.
Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed approve of the job Obama's doing as president, according to a CNN Poll of Polls compiled and released Friday, with 36 percent disapproving.
Ironically, George W. Bush also drew a 57 percent approval rating six months into his presidency.
Al-Jazeera suspended in West Bank
By SouthLand on Thu, 16/07/2009 - 2:11amPalestinians suspend Al-Jazeera in West Bank
By BEN HUBBARD, Associated Press Writer Ben Hubbard, Associated Press Writer – Wed Jul 15, 3:45 pm ET
RAMALLAH, West Bank – The Palestinian government shut down the West Bank operations of the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera on Wednesday, a day after a guest on the station accused the Palestinian president of involvement in Yasser Arafat's death.
For the feisty news station — the Arab world's most popular — the closure represents the latest clash with a Middle Eastern government. Israel often criticizes it, Iraq has expelled it and Saudi Arabia only let it resume work recently after a long ban.
