pork products in Materna multi-vitamin
By CAinDoha on Thu, 24/09/2009 - 5:58amHi there,
I just heard a rumor that materna, the pre-natal multivitamin, has a pork by-product. I called materna's headquarters in Canada, and they confirmed that there is gelatin in the vitamin and it is either from pig, sheep, or cow, but they can't confirm which one as the ingredient is outsourced.
I did buy these materna pills in Canada, so I am not sure if it applies to the materna products here, so for expectant Muslim moms, do double check when you buy the materna products because if it is made in Canada, try another brand.

Khanzir the pig
Khanzir was given to the zoo by China in 2002
Afghanistan's only known pig has been quarantined because of fears over swine flu, officials from Kabul Zoo say.
The pig, a curiosity in a country where pork products are illegal, lives at the zoo, where he had previously enjoyed grazing next to deer and goats.
However visitors expressed fears that the animal could be carrying the H1N1 virus and he was moved into isolation.
The director of the zoo, Aziz Gul Saqib, says the pig, whose name is Khanzir, is strong and healthy.
Man infects pigs with swine flu !

Man infects pigs with swine flu on farm in Canada
A farm worker in Canada has infected a herd of pigs with swine flu, the first documented case of the virus being passed from human beings to animals.
The herd of pigs tested positive for the H1N1 virus after the worker returned from Mexico with the disease. The herd has been quarantined.
Brian Evans, a senior official from Canada’s food safety agency, said that up to 200 pigs had been infected at the Alberta Farm, and that both the man and pigs are recovering, adding that the virus did not seem to have spread.
He emphasised that there was no food safety concern related to this finding. "The chance that these pigs could transfer virus to a person is remote," he said.
Swine Flu => Key Facts about Swine Influenza
By Sunillawrence on Wed, 29/04/2009 - 2:58pmSwine Flu => Key Facts about Swine Influenza ... !!!
Swine Flu
What is Swine Influenza?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.
How many swine flu viruses are there?
Swine flu name offensive??
By ummjake on Mon, 27/04/2009 - 9:06pmOMG.
Are they serious?
People are dying, and they want to argue that the name of the virus offends the sensibilities of Jews and Muslims?
These are probably the same folks that won't allow their kids to read "Winnie The Pooh" because of Piglet.
Guess what people?
Pigs DO exist!
LOL!
JERUSALEM – The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday.
Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel.
Both Judaism and Islam consider pigs unclean and forbid the eating of pork products.
FAQ on Swine Influenza (Source: WHO)
By rockduke on Mon, 27/04/2009 - 2:01pmWhat is swine influenza?
Swine influenza, or “swine flu", is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses. Morbidity tends to be high and mortality low (1-4%). The virus is spread among pigs by aerosols, direct and indirect contact, and asymptomatic carrier pigs. Outbreaks in pigs occur year round, with an increased incidence in the fall and winter in temperate zones. Many countries routinely vaccinate swine populations against swine influenza.
