Qtel Doubles ADSL internet speed for Free!!!

Yes it has happened. A number of my friends got an SMS form Qtel letting them know that their broadband ADSL connection bandwidth has been doubled. I didn't get the SMS but as soon as I came home I ran the Internet Speed Test and lo and behold, my previously 1 MB connection was now showing the below readings!!!

2MB, woo hoo, now I'll be surfing QL twice as fast :o)

The official Qtel announcement is here:

Q-Tel ADSL upgrade

just FYI.

The ADSL speed upgrade will effectively double Broadband speeds for ADSL and Mozaic TV+ customers, free of charge, with immediate effect.
With the speed upgrade program, customers currently enjoying speeds of 512 Kbps can migrate to 1 Mbps without any additional charges, retaining the competitive price of QR200 a month.
This same speed upgrade is being made available for customers of Mozaic TV+, which will now come with 1 Mbps as standard.
Customers using the higher 1 Mbps or 2 Mbps service can move up to the 2Mbps or the new 4 Mbps service – without additional charges.
Qtel will now phase out the 512 Kbps service, and deliver 1 Mbps high speed Internet as standard. Customers will be able to deploy the 1 Mbps for QR200, 2 Mbps for QR 300, and 4 Mbps for QR 400.

New Broadband Speed by Qtel

Qtel announced today the change in broadband speed from 512 Kbps to 1 Mbps both ADSL and Mozaic TV+ customers. With the free speed improvement programme, customers currently enjoying speeds of 512 Kbps can migrate to 1 Mbps without any additional charges.

Question: Is the “migration” occurs automatically (based on existing ADSL modem) or do we have to change to a new ADSL modem to cope with this new speed?

Good Day / Bad Day

It's not all bad. I had a GOOD experience in Qatar today. Something went smoothly. I went to the Q-Tel shop and got myself signed up for the mobile broadband deal for 400 Riyals a month unlimited usage (a bit pricey, but there you go). I was in and out of the shop in 20 minutes and, took it home, inserted the SIM card into the USB stick, stuck it into my laptop, installed the software and got connected. Not one glitch. It's a decent-ish speed too. Haven't tried Skype on it yet...that's another story.

Internet

Home internet connectivity must be requested when you apply for telephone to avoid delays and confusion.
Offered solely by Qtel (www.qtel.com.qa) in various packages including a month-to-month including ADSL packages.

Qtel's Mobile Broadband Rape

QTEL: We rip you off, you know it, but you'll like it!

As the only wireless broadband internet service provider in all qatar, i had learned to live with and cope with the fact that qtel will not only give you hell with its crappy dead-slow connection, but will make you pay enormous amounts for it...

I have had lately subscribed to the "unlimited" package for 400QR/month. As it turns out though.. Qtel defines Unlimited by Limited for 15 GB... hmm.. As for the download speeds.. well it varies from "frequent cut-offs=0kBps" to 4 kB/s.

And last but not least, customer service... Last time i called 111 for internet customer service, i was put on Hold on the line for "TWENTY FOUR MINUTES" = 24 minutes!!
