Brave Girl

RANCHI: A teenage girl was shot by Maoist rebels in Jharkhand's Latehar district for slapping rape charges on a Maoist leader, police said Friday. The victim is struggling for life in a hospital here.

Maoist guerrillas shot three bullets into 17-year-old Anju Kumari on Thursday. She was injured critically and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS).

"Anju sustained three bullets in her stomach. Her condition is critical," a doctor said.

Anju was shot when she was riding her bicycle in an area close to Latehar railway station. She was stopped by three motorcycle-borne Maoist rebels including the Maoist commander Pappu Lohra, who allegedly pumped three bullets into Anju's stomach and then fled, police said.

Burj Khalifa-Dubai is cheaper than Delhi .!!!

Article Taken from Times of India - by Anshul Dhamija,

TNN 6 January 2010, 12:17am IST

An apartment on the 100th floor of 'Burj Khalifa', the world's tallest building and one of the most sought after addresses in the world today, comes at a price of Rs 38,000 per sq ft.

But if you think that's a soaring price, consider this: desi realty rates beat that by a mile. The rates of apartments on Prithviraj Road and Aurangzeb Road in central Delhi are much higher. The per sq ft rate of apartments in Marble Arch and Tata Apartments on Prithviraj Road is around Rs 65,000 per sq ft. Similarly, Ansal apartments on Aurangzeb Road have a price of Rs 55,000 per sq ft, said senior broker Hemendra Sharma.

Trying my luck on these matrimonial websites

I initially came across these classifieds the day I started reading the Gulf Times newspaper about more than two years ago, then from reading Times of India, and now after sharing the idea from a person who occasionally looks at their local national newspaper website on their coffee mornings.

Let's just say that we don't have these type of 'cultural norm' back home and made me curious how it works. Oftentimes in one newspaper or website that contains such classifieds they indicate whether you prefer a lady or a man of the same caste or language or profession or religion or salary income even just about his/her diet or hobbies. Well it's nice to know that I've seen plenty of successful couples (well the website says it, wonder if it's true or not) who've met their match through these.

Nanny drugs, rents out baby to beggars

Bangalore: A nanny hired by a couple in India’s IT hub of Bangalore regularly drugged the seven-month-old baby in her care and rented him out for Rs100 a day, to be used by street beggars, the Times of India newspaper reported yesterday.

Early every morning, the couple used to dress their baby in the finest of clothes, keep fresh milk and eatables ready and leave the child in the hands of the nanny who was hired through an established agency.
But as soon as the couple left, the nanny used to mix sedatives in the milk and dress the kid in torn and dirty clothes, the report said.

For the entire day the drowsy child would be carried by a beggar on her shoulders and dropped back in the evening.

Safe houses to protect against honour killing

Police in Haryana, an affluent but conservative northern state, said that they had been overwhelmed by hundreds of cases in which couples had been attacked by enraged relatives for ignoring the strict social codes that dictate who they should marry.

Under a pilot scheme that will start this month, newlyweds judged to be most at risk will start their lives together under armed guard.

In the rural villages of Haryana, caste purity and adherence to traditions are paramount. As a result, the state has grown notorious as the “honour killing” capital of India.
