Iranian-American academic gets 12y in unrest

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran ignored appeals by Hillary Rodham Clinton and even rock star Sting and sentenced an Iranian-American academic to 12 years in prison Tuesday for his alleged role in anti-government protests after the country's disputed presidential election.

The sentence for Kian Tajbakhsh was the longest prison term yet in a mass trial of more than 100 opposition figures, activists and journalists in the postelection turmoil.

At the same time, Iran allowed another defendant to leave the country — Canadian-Iranian Maziar Bahari, a Newsweek journalist arrested in the same crackdown who had been freed on bail over the weekend.

Qatar - The Political Perspective

All of us who are originally from here or have made Qatar our second home get very little information related to it's political dynamics. I, for one, have been trying to find a few good sources of information specially related to the issues of foreign intrests. Found this one informed.

The Qataris have made the generation leap under their new Emir, Shaikh Hamad, with the political situation having stabilised. As a result, Qatar is one of the most attractive countries for foreign investors in the Middle East, with the state's decision making mechanism having improved.

However, Qatar embraces many contradictions. The emirate hoists several different flags, which together describe the bizarre combination of its policies:

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: 7 DAYS LEFT

Iran has test-fired a series of medium- and longer-range missiles that put Israel, parts of Europe and US bases in the Gulf within potential striking range.

The White House called the move "provocative" but Iran's foreign ministry said the tests were merely part of an annual military drill, and were not a reaction to the nuclear crisis.

Iran insists that all its nuclear facilities are for peaceful energy purposes and rejects accusations from the US and others that it is seeking a nuclear weapon.

US President Barack Obama has hinted at pursuing tougher sanctions against Tehran if progress over the crisis is not made.

Russia recently signalled it might be prepared to soften its opposition to further sanctions.

Iran - Question and Answer

Raheem

Answer to a Question

Question: After two weeks of protests and demonstrations in Iran, is it envisaged that these protests would continue? What is the purpose of these persistent protests now that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been elected for a second term? Is a coup against the systems of the mullahs and Wilayat al-Faqih expected in Iran, thus stripping the spiritual guide of his religious authorities? In other words, is Iran about to undergo radical changes?
