Qatar: An oasis for exiles

In granting nationality to M.F. Husain, the Gulf state of Qatar has done what it always does best — providing refuge to those in trouble back home.
Whatever be the repercussions in India — ranging from shame to jubilation — the decision has further bolstered Doha’s reputation as the ‘exile capital’ of the world.
Husain happens to be just the latest in a long list of people, who, on being driven out of their homes, have found shelter in the sleepy Qatari capital.
The most high profile of them have been the wife and daughters of Saddam Hussein. Saddam went into hiding after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, while wife Sajjad, accompanied by daughters, Raghad and Rana, slipped into Qatar to live anonymously.

Unrepentant Blair says: ‘I’d do it again'

Guess his pride is still not letting him admit his mistake.. Infact he is feeling proud for the needless war and killings in Iraq.. What an A55...

Unrepentant, unforgiven, Blair says: ‘I’d do it again’

Tony Blair was branded a murderer and liar last night after he ended his historic appearance before the Iraq inquiry with a blank refusal to voice regrets over toppling Saddam Hussein.

After six hours in which the Chilcot inquiry team had largely failed to breach his defences, the former Prime Minister brought trouble on himself by failing to show the contrition that his critics wanted.

Fourth Death sentence for "Chemical Ali"

Ali Hassan al-Majid, a former Iraqi official known as Chemical Ali, has been sentenced to death for ordering the gassing of Kurds.

It is the fourth time that Majid, an enforcer in Saddam Hussein's regime, has been sentenced to death.

He has also been convicted of the killings of Shia Muslims in 1991 and 1999 and for his role in a campaign of genocide against Kurds in the 1980s.

His latest sentence is for a gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988.

It is believed that 5,000 people died in the attack, most of them women and children. Iraqi jets swooped over Halabja and for five hours sprayed it with a lethal cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX.

Blair the sycophant:

Couldn't have said it better about our B-Liar...

Tony Blair's 'sycophancy' towards George Bush drove him to invade Iraq and into 'a foreign policy disgrace of epic proportions', according to a devastating critique by a top lawyer.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir Ken Macdonald said Mr Blair and Mr Bush engaged in 'an alarming subterfuge' to drag their nations into war.

In the strongest-yet public attack on Mr Blair's decision to go to war, Sir Ken took issue with the former Prime Minister's claim in a TV interview that he would have backed toppling Saddam Hussein even if he had known the dictator had no weapons of mass destruction.

"New Student"

It was the first day of school and a new student named Tomas, the son of a Filipino immigrant, entered the sixth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American history. Who said "Give me Liberty, or give me Death?"

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Tomas, who had his hand up.
"Patrick Henry, 1775."

"Very good! Who said 'Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth'"?

Again, no response except from Tomas: "Abraham Lincoln, 1863," said Tomas.

The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed. Tomas, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do."

She heard a loud whisper: "Screw the Filipinos."

Iraq & Syria ? New war?

Amid a growing row, the two countries have traded insults and recalled their ambassadors in recent weeks.

During Saddam Hussein's 1979-2003 rule, Iraq and Syria were governed by rival branches of the Arab nationalist Baath Party and ties between them were characterised by mutual hostility.

Although diplomatic relations were restored in 2006, the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003 saw many of his former allies flee to Syria, renewing tensions between the countries.
