Two jailed for accident that killed minister

DOHA: A higher criminal court here sentenced two young men to jail on Monday after they were found guilty of causing a road accident in which the then minister of business and trade, Sheikh Fahad bin Jassem Al Thani, was killed in May 2008.

The court, with the panel of judges headed by Nasser bin Mohamed Al Dosri, sentenced one of the convicts to three years in prison and the other to two years.

Sheikh Fahad was heading home with a friend. The latter suffered serious injuries in the accident but survived.

The mishap took place on the Doha-Al Wakra highway around midnight when one of the two four-wheelers involved in daredevilry and racing on the highway hit the minister’s car, injuring him.

DOHA: The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is introducing a new appointment system in the Women’s Hospital Out-Patient Department which is expected to reduce the wait time to see a doctor.

This new system will go into effect on November 1. All patients with upcoming appointments will receive a telephone call to explain how the new system works.

Wait times for patients are being reduced through three significant improvements to the existing system. First, patients will be able to see the doctor by making an appointment for a time dedicated exclusively for them.

Medical experts, who took part in a discussion on H1N1 flu, have advised against postponing the reopening of schools after the summer vacation in Qatar, but urged the health authorities and parents to remain “vigilant” to confront the disease on a case-by-case basis.
Most of the schools in Qatar are scheduled to begin their new academic year on September 26.
The discussion was organised and hosted by the Friends of Environment Centre at its Green Tent, where contemporary issues of local interest are taken up during the month of Ramadan.
While some of the speakers accused the media of “exaggerating” the threat from H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu, others believed the matter should be taken seriously to prevent catastrophic consequences for the humanity.
