Beggars still active despite crackdown
By razzak on Sun, 06/09/2009 - 11:48amDespite the government’s stepped up efforts to contain begging during Ramadan, the practice continues – albeit at a reduced level and with different approaches.
Muslims are supposed to give more to charity during the holy month. This attracts beggars even from outside the country.
One new attempt by the beggars is to corner people a little distance away from a mosque, a resident said yesterday.
“As I came out of the Taraweeh prayers, I was stopped by a man in his early 30s in middle class attire who insisted he be helped,” the resident said.
Although he explained that he did not carry any money while going to the mosque the man asked for QR100, the resident added.
After being turned down the beggar moved away from the mosque.
Saudi prince injured in suicide bombing
By britexpat on Fri, 28/08/2009 - 1:14pmAmazing how headlines portray a story..
The headline is dramatic - INJURED.. Then the story says he was slightly injured .. No mention o others who may have died..
A wanted militant blew himself up in an apparent assassination attempt against Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, deputy interior minister in charge of security, in the Red Sea port of Jeddah.
The Saudi Press Agency said the man was being searched by security before going to offer Ramadan greetings to Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, when the bomb was detonated.
The attack was the first to directly target a member of the royal family since the start of a wave of violence by al Qa'eda sympathisers in 2003 against the U.S.-allied monarchy.
Scholars call for self-restraint( Gulf Times)
By TrueFriend on Sat, 22/08/2009 - 8:55amRamadan means not only abstention from food and drink from dawn to sunset but also self-restraint in all aspects of life, Muslim scholars pointed out in their Friday sermons yesterday.
Sheikh Ahmed al-Buainain said that fasting was mainly a way to achieve piety and to give spiritual boost for Muslims.
“Fasting is not only about (abstention from) food, water, sex and smoking. It is more than that. It is to give up gossip, falsity and restrain yourself from all types of worldly desires,” Sheikh al-Buainain told a congregation at Sohaib al-Roumi mosque at Al Wakrah.
The scholar urged Muslims to take the month as a “new beginning” for their life and change it for the better, saying that Ramadan was an opportunity for smokers to give up.
