Italians bribed the Taleban in Afghanistan !

This is the best way to fight a war ............

A Taleban commander and two senior Afghan officials confirmed yesterday that Italian forces paid protection money to prevent attacks on their troops.

The payment of protection money was revealed after the death of ten French soldiers in August 2008 at the hands of large Taleban force in Sarobi. French forces had taken over the district from Italian troops, but were unaware of secret Italian payments to local commanders to stop attacks on their forces and consequently misjudged local threat levels.

Karzai on brink of a tainted victory

Once again we support a corrupt president just to further our own ends... However, this time, people are beginning to question.................................

An international summit on the future of Afghanistan was Gordon Brown’s answer last night as the clamour for an exit strategy from the conflict grew louder. With President Karzai ready to claim outright victory in Afghanistan’s flawed elections, the Prime Minister announced his plans for the meeting, which could take place this year in either London or Kabul.

Why do terrorists name their leaders ?

Saw a headline today saying that Hakimullah Mehsud famed for his ferociousness and believed to have masterminded the bloody attack on Sri Lankan cricket team early this year was named as new Pakistan Taleban leader.

This got me thinking. Why would they advertise the new leader, especially since most of the past leaders have all died violent deaths at the wrong end of a misile or Canon.

Is a Government based on Tyranny the answer ?

Bernioe Eccelstone seems to think so !!!!!!!!!!

Leaving aside his remarks on Hitler and not taking this discussion into the holocaust... Would you agree ????

Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One chief, said yesterday that he preferred totalitarian regimes to democracies and praised Adolf Hitler for his ability to “get things done”.

In an outspoken interview with The Times, the 78-year-old billionaire chastised contemporary politicians for their weakness and extolled the virtues of strong leadership.

Pakistan battles Taleban - Make or Break ?

This seems to be the make or break time for Pakistan. The sad thing is that usual , the innocents are suffering.. There could be a humanitarian catastrophe in the making....

Please keep the discussion on the topic, rather than moving it to a India / Pakistan bash :)

With jet fighters screeching overhead, tens of thousands of people fled Pakistan’s once-idyllic Swat Valley yesterday, increasing a humanitarian crisis that threatens to undermine public support for the military campaign against the Taleban.

Radicals beat girl, 17, in Islamic stronghold of Swat, Pakistan
This grainy footage appears to show a 17-year-old girl being beaten by Islamic radicals in Pakistan’s northwestern region of Swat, where Sharia law was introduced after the government reached a truce with the Taleban in February.

A local Taleban commander in the militant stronghold of Matta, 25 miles from the regional capital, Mingora, ordered the girl to be flogged a week ago after accusing her of adultery, according to local reporters.

But some residents of Matta have accused the commander of ordering the beating to get revenge after the girl refused to accept his proposal of marriage, the reporters told The Times.

Continuation of Attacks on Pakistan

"President Obama has made it clear that the Afghanistan theatre should be our top overseas military priority," Mr Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

At his first hearing since President Obama took over last week, the defence secretary was also questioned about future policy on al-Qaeda, the militant network which claimed responsibility for the 9/11 attacks on America.

US would "go after al-Qaeda wherever al-Qaeda is", and confirmed that the government of Pakistan had been informed of that intention.

US drones fired missiles into Pakistan's north-western regions of North and South Waziristan on Friday, killing at least 14 people, according to intelligence officials and residents.

Diary of a Pakistani schoolgirl

Private schools in Pakistan's troubled north-western Swat district have been ordered to close in a Taleban edict banning girls' education. Militants seeking to impose their austere interpretation of Sharia law have destroyed about 150 schools in the past year. Five more were blown up despite a government pledge to safeguard education, it was reported on Monday. Here a seventh grade schoolgirl from Swat chronicles how the ban has affected her and her classmates. The diary first appeared on BBC Urdu online.

THURSDAY JANUARY 15: NIGHT FILLED WITH ARTILLERY FIRE
The night was filled with the noise of artillery fire and I woke up three times. But since there was no school I got up later at 10 am. Afterwards, my friend came over and we discussed our homework.
