Europe has a new President...
By britexpat on Fri, 20/11/2009 - 10:53amWhat a farce. Europe has it's first president and foreign minister..
Hands up if you've ever heard of the. What no one ???
In a stitch-up between the two big blocs of the EU, the Centre Right fell in behind Herman Van Rompuy, the Belgian Prime Minister, to take that job.
The centre-left Socialist leaders backed Baroness Ashton of Upholland, Britain’s Trade Commissioner, to be the first High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, as well as vice-president for external affairs.
The saving grace is that Tony B'Liar didn't get the job..
Post-Lisbon EU needs a European Army
By britexpat on Mon, 16/11/2009 - 8:49amNot mine, but an idea floated buy the Italians...
Lord help us.. How do we integrate the Challenger tanks with the Italian ones that only have reverse gears ?
Italy is to push for the creation of a European Army after the "new Europe" takes shape at this week's crucial EU summit following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.
Franco Frattini, the Italian Foreign Minister, said that the Lisbon Treaty had established "that if some countries want to enter into reinforced co-operation between themselves they can do so". This was already the case with the euro and the Schengen accords on frontier-free travel, and could now be applied to "common European defence".
Lisbon treaty signed - New Dawn in Europe
By britexpat on Wed, 04/11/2009 - 8:46amIMHO, a sad day for Europe. The Lisbon treaty will "federalize" Europe and take away a lot of the powers from sovereign nations .. RIP Europe!
Europe’s elite celebrated the imminent arrival of its first president last night as the last lingering resistance to the Lisbon treaty fell away with the stroke of a pen in Prague.
European leaders wasted no time in starting the process to choose their new president from a range of names including Tony Blair. Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Prime Minister of Sweden, which holds the EU presidency, began a round of telephone diplomacy to determine a shortlist of names.
Is my money safe in Qatar?
By eu61 on Sat, 31/10/2009 - 11:24pmInterest rates in US and EU central banks are around 1% and here there are banks offering "super saving accounts" with 5% interest?
and 5% cash back credit cards?
Maybe Im too suspicious and they have found the way to invest my money in order to give me that interest and still earn money?
EU confirms English as its official language
By ajinpt on Sun, 25/10/2009 - 5:00pmThe European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as 'Euro-English' .
In the first year, 's' will replace the soft 'c'. This will sertainly make the sivil servants jump with joy.
The hard 'c' will be dropped in favour of 'k'. This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced with 'f'. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

B-Liar could become President...
By britexpat on Sun, 04/10/2009 - 3:54pmIs there more abhorant a thought, but it is possible. Tony B-Liar is in line to become the first EU president.

UN to treat caste as human rights violation
By Arien on Tue, 29/09/2009 - 9:57amIf the recent genome study denying the Aryan-Dravidian divide has established the antiquity of caste segregations in marriage, the ongoing session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva looks set to recognize caste-based discrimination as a human rights violation. This, despite India's opposition and following Nepal's breaking ranks on the culturally sensitive issue.
Nepal has emerged as the first country from South Asia -- the region where untouchability has been traditionally practiced -- to declare support for the draft principles and guidelines published by UNHRC four months ago for ``effective elimination of discrimination based on work and descent'' -- the UN terminology for caste inequities.
