At a recent computer expo (COMDEX),Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part ):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........
Twice a day...

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

We first saw Jay Leno's EcoJet mid-engine turbine coupe at the 2006 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Leno, with General Motors' Design Chief, Ed Welburn, and Frank Saucedo, who heads the automaker's west coast studio, penned the design concept.

Leno has both a motorcycle and a pickup truck powered by "jet" turbine engines, so the plan was to create an automobile that would run on a similar powerplant fueled by biodiesel.

REUTERS - DETROIT General Motors Corp is recalling nearly 1.5 million Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac mid-sized cars due to a potential leak of engine oil that could cause an engine fire.

The recall applies to the 1997- 2003 Buick Regal; 1998-2003 Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala; 1998-99 Oldsmobile Intrigue; and 1997-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, GM said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In what may have been a gross understatement, General Motors CFO Ray Young summarized 2008 as "a tough year" in a conference call with investors last week. And its future certainly didn't look any brighter today, as Deloitte & Touche expressed its doubts that its carmaker-client will stay viable.

In the GM annual report filed today, the company carried the auditor opinion that GM had warned last week would be coming. "The corporation's recurring losses from operations, stockholders' deficit, and inability to generate sufficient cash flow to meet its obligations and sustain its operations raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern," wrote Deloitte.

the total job losses in the first two months of 2009 to about four lakh.

While a few are calling it simply layoffs and terminations, others have nomenclatures like right sizing, voluntary separation packages and workforce optimisation.

With the global economic downturn forcing one and all to adopt various cost-cutting measures, firms are estimated to have already cut close to 10 million jobs during 2008, but, with no immediate recovery in sight from the ongoing crisis, more steps are being taken to save every single penny.
