For the first time since he declared his presidential bid last December, Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has breached the double-digit popularity rating in a massive survey conducted by independent pollster Campaign and Images.

The Harvard-educated Teodoro chalked up 24 percent, threatening to overtake Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Senator Manuel Villar, who came on top with a 31 percent rating in the survey.

Residents in Metro Manila on Wednesday went through the hottest day so far this year at 35.5 degrees Celsius, even as state weather forecasters warned of hotter days until at least mid-May.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) noted this came just one week after Metro Manila went through 34.5-degree heat.

"Kahapon so far yan ang pinakamainit ngayong tag-init, maximum kahapon 3:30 p.m., 35.5 degrees Celsius dito sa Metro Manila (Wednesday was the hottest day so far this year, with temperatures climbing to 35.5 degrees Celsius in Metro Manila at about 3:30 p.m.)," Pagasa forecaster Elvie Enriquez said in an interview on dzBB radio on Thursday.

Street corner ‘tutorial’

I just had to post this...from an editorial

THE kids watched as I tightened a shoe lace along one of Cagayan de Oro city’s poorer but remarkably clean-swept barangays. A tutorial on urban sociology was the last thing I expected.

“My mother is in prison,” volunteered Clara, 7. Why? “Shabu,” she said matter-of-factly. Paula, 6, claims a neighbor rival tipped off the cops. “Her mother burned all the shabu before the police arrived.”

Will you visit her in the Davao jail? “We have no money. But my lolo has been released.” He’d also been in the clink for drugs. “He often beats us though,” Clara gripes.

They proudly point to “our school.” Paula likes to color. “But I have no Crayolas.” Clara’s schoolbag has a book and a pencil. Nothing else.

Bakit sila napadpad doon? (OFWs killed in Afghanistan chopper crash)

(Update 2) 10 OFWs killed in Afghan chopper crash

DUBAI - Ten Filipino workers were among 16 people killed when a civilian helicopter crashed at southern Afghanistan's largest NATO base on Sunday, official sources and a relative of one of the victims told ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau.

In a telephone interview, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) spokesman Ed Malaya said Philippine embassy officials based in Pakistan, together with the appropriate officials, are now in Kabul to verify the report.

Malaya said there is an existing ban of deployment of Filipino workers to Afghanistan, and the DFA is urging everyone to comply with the ban.
