Backlash of fanatics March in England

Backlash over fanatics' march: As 250,000 protest, PM condemns hate preacher's plan for parade in town that honours war dead

By Ian Drury

Alan Johnson will support any request to ban a provocative march by Islamic extremists through Wootton Bassett, the town renowned for honouring Britain's war dead.

The Home Secretary reacted yesterday to mounting public anger at hate preacher Anjem Choudary's plan to stage the stunt.

Gordon Brown had earlier declared that he was 'completely disgusted' at the 'abhorrent' protest proposed by the firebrand cleric.

Israeli MPs on Thursday threatened to call a boycott of British products unless London withdraws an advisory allowing retailers to state whether West Bank products were made by Palestinians or Jewish settlers.

So far, 40 of Israel's 120 MPs have signed the petition which is to be sent to the British parliament, according to an aide to MP Ronit Tirosh of the centrist Kadima party.

Tirosh, leading the initiative, said the petition threatens "to call on Israelis to think twice before buying British products if the decision is not rescinded by the British government."

She also called on officials to boycott British airlines.

Drug Money Saved Banks in Global Crisis

Drug money saved banks in global crisis, claims UN advisorDrugs and crime chief says $352bn in criminal proceeds was effectively laundered by financial institutions

Rajeev Syal
The Observer, Sunday 13 December 2009

Drugs money worth billions of dollars kept the financial system afloat at the height of the global crisis, the United Nations' drugs and crime tsar has told the Observer.

Antonio Maria Costa, head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, said he has seen evidence that the proceeds of organised crime were "the only liquid investment capital" available to some banks on the brink of collapse last year. He said that a majority of the $352bn (£216bn) of drugs profits was absorbed into the economic system as a result.

West hails Karzai as 'legitimate' president..

This shows that political expediency takes precedence over ethics and morality. We should all be ashamed of our leaders :O(

British and American officials rushed to congratulate Mr Karzai as the country's "legitimate leader" as the international community tried to draw a line under months of paralysing political limbo following the Aug 20 vote which was mired in fraud.

But London and Washington also made clear that they expect him to make immediate moves towards bolstering the ranks of the armed forces, tackling corruption and giving the defeated opposition a role within his new government.

D& D(Drink&Die)

Alcohol will claim more than 90,000 lives over the next decade without urgent action to tackle the country's increasingly ruinous relationship with drinking, experts warn today.

They predict that 90,800 people will be killed by diseases directly linked to drinking, such as alcoholic liver disease and chronic hepatitis, and alcohol poisoning.

Deaths due to drinking have trebled over the last 25 years as per capita consumption has risen to become one of the highest in Europe, according to research by Prof Martin Plant, of the University of the West of England, one of the UK's leading authorities on alcohol-related harm.

Racism Excused

President Lula also insisted that the crisis was the creation of "white, blue-eyed bankers" in the rich world.

That expression first caused controversy in March, when the Brazilian leader used it while standing next to Gordon Brown during the UK prime minister's visit to Brasilia.

He was criticised for using the expression, considered by some to be inappropriate and bordering on racism.

Replace white, blue-eyed with yellow, slanted eyed and have it be said by a white president of a western country and the reaction would be one of disgust and indignation!! And quite rightly so.

Brilliant absolutely brilliant!!

From today's GT Made me chuckle this morning. No3 from Rumsfeld I think should be at No1!

Notoriously language-challenged Bush romped to the top accolade for his: “Our enemies are innovative and resourceful and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”
Second came bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-California governor Schwarzenegger, who during an election campaign in 2003 minted the puzzling: “I think that gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.”
The rest of the top 10 in the poll, commissioned by an insurance company after it won an award from the Plain English Campaign, were:

Karzai on brink of a tainted victory

Once again we support a corrupt president just to further our own ends... However, this time, people are beginning to question.................................

An international summit on the future of Afghanistan was Gordon Brown’s answer last night as the clamour for an exit strategy from the conflict grew louder. With President Karzai ready to claim outright victory in Afghanistan’s flawed elections, the Prime Minister announced his plans for the meeting, which could take place this year in either London or Kabul.
