Qataris buy US Embassy building in London

The United States has agreed to sell its embassy building in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, to Qatari Diar, the sovereign wealth-backed developer, for an undisclosed sum.

The US State Department said that it will sell the Chancery building, home to the US Embassy in Britain for almost half a century, to the property investment company owned by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).

The building was worth an estimated £500 million at the peak of the market in July 2007 when Qatari Diar was first linked with a possible purchase. However, the building is now thought to be worth less after a 45 per cent decline in commercial property values.

US 'to quiz Sri Lanka army chief'

Sri Lanka says its army chief faces questioning by the US government, over alleged war crimes committed during the war with the Tamil Tigers.

The Sri Lankan government has told the BBC that it objects to American plans to interview General Sarath Fonseka, who is currently on a visit to the US.
The American State Department published a recent report outlining allegations of human rights abuses during the war.
General Fonseka is visiting his daughters in Oklahoma, and has been asked to present himself for an interview with the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, reports say.

Suicide soars among US soldiers

As the US government throws its weight about the globe, hundreds of thousands of men, women and children fall before Uncle Sam's swinging scythe.

But, those at the cutting edge of the scythe are falling too, often by their own hands, in the inescapable confines of their homes or quarters in the barracks back on the US soil.

In 2008, 143 soldiers committed suicide, the highest number in the three decades that the army has kept records, reports Washington Post.

But, with months still to go till the new year and 141 suicides since January, that figure has almost been reached, with no sign of a slow-down in self-destructive drives of the US soldiers.

The US military, thus, faces a difficult challenge.

North Korea 'executes Christians'

North Korea 'executes Christians'
By Andre Vornic
BBC News

Human rights groups in South Korea say North Korea has stepped up executions of Christians, some of them in public.

The communist country, the world's most closed society, views religion as a major threat.

Only the founder of the country, Kim Il-sung, and his son, Kim Jong-il, may be worshipped, in mass public displays of fervour.

Despite the persecutions, it is thought up to 30,000 North Koreans may practise Christianity secretly in their homes.

A report by a number of South Korean groups highlights one particular case of a woman allegedly executed in public last month, in a northern town close to the Chinese border.

Neda soltan - Rachel Corrie

President Barack Obama describes the death of Neda Soltan as 'heartbreaking'...

a photo of Neda is distributed worlwide to see how brutal Iranian regime is!! what a heartful president!

Why were there no mass coverage of the martyrdom of Rachel Corrie who gave her life defending, not her life, other people's rights of life!!

While I feel sorry to see Neda's death who may have not known how her march would end up, I am stunned on how someone could face death knowingly as did Rachel.

Why did the US government not give Rachel the recognition she deserves?

Was there nothing fundamentally unjust leading to Rachel's death?

"Can Obama Bring Back My Mother, Life?"

LAHORE — Watching the news about US President Barack Obama's decision to close down Guantanamo within a year did not bring a smile on the face of Mohammad Saad Iqbal.
It rather reminded the 31-year-old Pakistani of the hellish days he endured in the notorious detention center and how that many innocent people would still have to do that for more 365 long days.

"Obama has given one more year to brutal interrogators to torture innocent people," Iqbal, released last August, told IslamOnline.net in an exclusive interview in his family's home in Lahore.

Gitmo in Focus

The US has been holding hundreds of detainees at Guantanamo, opened in 2002, for years, branding them unlawful enemy combatants to deny them legal rights under the US legal system.

Earth population 'exceeds limits'

This is the greater threat to climate change, if we don't population under control then co2 targets are meaningless. Especially in a place like Qatar.

So birth control for all nations??? No more than 2 kids per couple....

There are already too many people living on Planet Earth, according to one of most influential science advisors in the US government.

Nina Fedoroff told the BBC One Planet programme that humans had exceeded the Earth's "limits of sustainability".

Let’s penalize all the culprits!!!

Through history, said one news paper editor Girilal Jain, whenever things go wrong, Indian rulers blamed the bania (traders). The US is no different. After the global meltdown, US politicians are baying for the blood of financiers. They have just legislated a 90% tax on bonuses of staff at AIG, the insurance giant rescued by the US government. Legislators were angry that financiers responsible for AIG’s collapse could be rewarded with bonuses, and sought to expropriate these.
