Discovery: Newborn Cry in their Mother Tongue
By _noms_ on Tue, 17/11/2009 - 9:46amNewborn Babies May Cry in their Mother Tongues
Only days after birth, babies have a bawl with language. Newborn babies cry in melodic patterns that they have heard in adults’ conversations—even while in the womb, say medical anthropologist Kathleen Wermke of the University of Würzburg in Germany, and her colleagues. By 2 to 5 days of age, infants’ cries bear the tuneful signature of their parents’ native tongue, a sign that language learning has already commenced, the researchers report in a paper published online November 5 in Current Biology.

Millions want to switch countries
By ummjake on Wed, 04/11/2009 - 9:10pm"WASHINGTON (AFP) – Some 700 million people worldwide, or more than all the adults of North and South America combined, think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and want to permanently move to another country, a poll showed Tuesday.
Residents of sub-Saharan African countries were the most likely to want to move abroad permanently, the polls conducted in 135 countries between 2007 and this year by Gallup showed.
On average, 38 percent of the adult population in sub-Saharan Africa, or around 165 million people, said they would up stakes and head for another country if they had the chance.
The most popular destination was the United States, where nearly a quarter of the 700 million -- around 165 million people -- said they would like to settle.
Lisbon treaty signed - New Dawn in Europe
By britexpat on Wed, 04/11/2009 - 8:46amIMHO, a sad day for Europe. The Lisbon treaty will "federalize" Europe and take away a lot of the powers from sovereign nations .. RIP Europe!
Europe’s elite celebrated the imminent arrival of its first president last night as the last lingering resistance to the Lisbon treaty fell away with the stroke of a pen in Prague.
European leaders wasted no time in starting the process to choose their new president from a range of names including Tony Blair. Fredrik Reinfeldt, the Prime Minister of Sweden, which holds the EU presidency, began a round of telephone diplomacy to determine a shortlist of names.
Cat cannot visit Buddhist robber in jail
By britexpat on Wed, 04/11/2009 - 7:38amIt's people like this that make the world such an interesting place :O)
A Buddhist bank robber has had his request for his cat to have visiting rights to him in jail turned down by a court – despite his plea that it is the reincarnation of his mother.
Peter Keonig, 46, is serving five-years for armed robberies in Whirl, Germany.
He went to court this week demanding the right for his cat Gisela to be allowed to visit him in jail "because she is my dead mum".
Buddhists believe that people come back as other animals after death. He said: "I know it is mummy. She looks after me just the way she did. I need to see her like other prisoners see their wives and children."
