As Internet turns 40, barriers threaten its growth
By Glen_IT on Sun, 30/08/2009 - 10:47amNEW YORK - Goofy videos weren't on the minds of Len Kleinrock and his team at UCLA when they began tests 40 years ago on what would become the Internet. Neither was social networking, for that matter, nor were most of the other easy-to-use applications that have drawn more than a billion people online.
Instead the researchers sought to create an open network for freely exchanging information, an openness that ultimately spurred the innovation that would later spawn the likes of YouTube, Facebook and the World Wide Web.
There's still plenty of room for innovation today, yet the openness fostering it may be eroding. While the Internet is more widely available and faster than ever, artificial barriers threaten to constrict its growth.
Call it a mid-life crisis.

Thanks for the 2008 emails
By cat.inc on Tue, 14/04/2009 - 8:34amDear All
I thought I would wish you a pleasant and successful 2009, filled with
great dreams. My thanks to all those who have sent me emails this past
year........
I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat [Let's not get blocked by the Telco] in the glue
on envelopes because I now have to use a wet towel with every envelope that
needs sealing. Also, I now have to scrub the top of every can I open for the
same reason.
I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown);
who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.
I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the
R15, 000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating
in their special e-mail program....
