Street corner ‘tutorial’
By memphis7 on Sun, 25/10/2009 - 9:24amI just had to post this...from an editorial
THE kids watched as I tightened a shoe lace along one of Cagayan de Oro city’s poorer but remarkably clean-swept barangays. A tutorial on urban sociology was the last thing I expected.
“My mother is in prison,” volunteered Clara, 7. Why? “Shabu,” she said matter-of-factly. Paula, 6, claims a neighbor rival tipped off the cops. “Her mother burned all the shabu before the police arrived.”
Will you visit her in the Davao jail? “We have no money. But my lolo has been released.” He’d also been in the clink for drugs. “He often beats us though,” Clara gripes.
They proudly point to “our school.” Paula likes to color. “But I have no Crayolas.” Clara’s schoolbag has a book and a pencil. Nothing else.
The world's top universities
By Dracula on Sat, 10/10/2009 - 9:21pmThe study, from Times Higher Education and QS Top Universities shows that overall the UK still punches above its weight, second only to the US.
The UK has four out of the top 10 slots and 18 in the top 100.
But there has been a significant fall in the number of North American universities in the top 100, from 42 in 2008 to 36 in 2009.
However, the number of Asian universities in the top 100 increased from 14 to 16.
The University of Tokyo, at 22, is the highest ranked Asian university, ahead of the University of Hong Kong at 24.

Scaling a wall

I’m not sure if Jimmy Galindo, my rock-climbing instructor, meant to be funny when he told me that the sport involved “a steep learning curve,” but that line’s so good, I’m swiping it.
Indoor rock climbing: It’s a lot of fun, but you might say there’s a steep learning curve.
How steep? Well, Galindo’s Sportrock in Alexandria, Virginia, has walls as high as 40 feet, similar to the other two gyms I visited, Earth Treks in Columbia, Maryland, (44 feet) and Results on Capitol Hill (38 feet).
Some oddities about the Moon Landing..
By britexpat on Sat, 18/07/2009 - 2:25pmI belive the landings did happen and here a few oddities for you all... Y'hera!
20 space oddities about their famous feat.
1. After placing his left foot on the lunar surface, Armstrong meant to say: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." He later apologised for fluffing the line by missing out the "a". But some experts think he did say the "a" and was let down by the relatively primitive recording technology of the time.
2. Aldrin's first action on the moon was to have a pee. The astronauts' spacesuits were each fitted with a pipe for urinating into, which they could later empty into a waste disposal unit on the lunar module.
3. The maiden name of Buzz Aldrin's mum was... Moon.

"Can Obama Bring Back My Mother, Life?"
By Jack78 on Sat, 25/04/2009 - 2:55pmLAHORE — Watching the news about US President Barack Obama's decision to close down Guantanamo within a year did not bring a smile on the face of Mohammad Saad Iqbal.
It rather reminded the 31-year-old Pakistani of the hellish days he endured in the notorious detention center and how that many innocent people would still have to do that for more 365 long days.
"Obama has given one more year to brutal interrogators to torture innocent people," Iqbal, released last August, told IslamOnline.net in an exclusive interview in his family's home in Lahore.
Gitmo in Focus
The US has been holding hundreds of detainees at Guantanamo, opened in 2002, for years, branding them unlawful enemy combatants to deny them legal rights under the US legal system.
6. What are the networking protocol options for the Windows clients if for some reason you do not want to use TCP/IP?

Obesity can be 'caught' from another individual in the same way as a cold, scientists suggest.
The condition has been linked to a highly-infectious virus which causes sniffles and sore throats.
Spread by dirty hands, the adenovirus apparently attacks tissue and causes fat cells to multiply - leading to massive weight gain.
Previous studies have shown that chickens and mice infected with the bug put on weight more quickly than uninfected animals - even when they do not eat more.
Now human studies show that almost a third of obese adults carry the virus compared with 11 per cent of lean men and women.
