March 10, 2009: At precisely 8.30pm on March 28 the diesel generators will be switched off on the Chatham Islands, a small archipelago off the east coast of New Zealand, heralding the start of the greatest community event the world has ever witnessed - Earth Hour 2009.
As the first country to flick the switch for the global event, WWF New Zealand's Earth Hour organiser, Dairne Poole sees her country as playing a vital role in Earth Hour’s journey to reach one billion people in over 1,000 cities, across 25 time zones.

tourist visa
By i.am.here on Thu, 05/03/2009 - 7:21pmI'll be having a stopover at Doha airport so I'm planning to get a visa to see the city.
I've read from other threads that I need a credit card or I can buy a e card there.
I don't have a credit card so I'd like to know if I can still buy an e card and how much it costs.
Can someone explain how the e card works too? I'm wondering if it is like a debit card, and can I use it after leaving qatar? or in other places to buy things when I'm in qatar?
How about prepaid cards obtained from other countries? I have a one from Bank of China (Hong Kong), and they say the card can be used at places where a visa card is accepted. Any idea if I can use it at the airport?
"With the added value you are ready to shop with confidence worldwide at any merchant who accepts VISA card for payment."
Near Miss
By daiwai on Sun, 01/03/2009 - 7:59pmArriving on an Airbus on Friday night from Hong Kong, we came in on the aproach over West Bay and I could see the "Torch" on the right as we passed over the Sheraton. Gliding in across the Corniche and then dropping right down to the runway and just about to land, we must have been about twenty feet off the ground and lined up with the first few parked jets, when suddenly the engines burst into life and we were dramatically pushed back up ...the pilot then calmly announced "Sorry about that ladies and gentlemen, but there appears to be another aircraft on the runway". Surely this is a "near-miss"? Has anyone read about it in the paper?
I'll be relocating to Guam...
By dekyo2000 on Sun, 01/03/2009 - 7:58amIn Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death.
(Like THAT makes sense.)
In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. (Do they look different reversed?)
Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers. The sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or piece of wood at all times. (A brick?)
The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Much worse than 'going blind!')

Qatar Airways response to Qpoints Question
By xtian001 on Sat, 28/02/2009 - 4:13pmWrote the Qatar Airawys Privilege Club the other day about something that has been bothering me. I'm quite surprised that they did answer me. Still, read the exchange of emails to see what this is all about.
Sent thru their website Contact form on February 25, 2009:
TITLE: Mr
FIRST NAME: xXx
LAST NAME: xXx
PRIVILEGE CLUB NO.: XXXXXXXXX
MESSAGE: I was wondering why flying to Hong Kong gets you 25 QPoints (5868 miles) while flying to the Philippines (6792 miles) only gets you 20 Qpoints?
I got an answer the next day (February 26, 2009) from Privilege Club Team:
Dear Mr. xXx,
Thank you for your email.
In Asia, suicides rise due to financial crisis
By nicaq25 on Thu, 26/02/2009 - 4:09pm“The situation is spilling over into homes. We see couples quarrelling when the real problem is job insecurity,” said psychiatrist Dominic Lee in Hong Kong.
Pinky Yung of Caritas Family Crisis Line & Education Centre said many people lost all or most of their savings. Others lost their businesses, jobs or were lumped with multiple mortgages.
Of the 2,301 patients the centre treated since mid-October, eight percent had suicidal thoughts, it said.
“Many of them were very thrifty in the past and they have lost all their money and the security that they spent all their lives building,” Yung said.
