A woman president?
By ammara on Wed, 20/08/2008 - 8:54amPublished: Wednesday, 20 August, 2008, 01:14 AM Doha Time In Gulf Times
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s new president is expected to fill a mostly ceremonial post, as the nation moves to a government dominated by the prime minister and parliament.
Among favourites for president is Asif Ali Zardari, head of the Pakistan People’s Party and husband of slain ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Other candidates being mentioned are Zardari’s sister, Faryal Talpur, and Aftab Shahban Mirani, the former defence minister under Bhutto and a longtime party loyalist.
Another possibility: Fahmida Mirza, speaker of the National Assembly.
Mirza and Talpur are women, and selecting one of them might be seen as a fitting tribute to Bhutto.
