e-Content Copyrights
By ict QATAR on Tue, 26/01/2010 - 6:39amFloating in cyberspace are millions and millions of web pages that contain all sorts of content - be it images, videos or simply just text. But with all the abundance of information online, content copyrights are not equally preserved, or as some might put it, not easy to control. The recent ITU TELECOM WORLD 2009 re-opened the debatable topic of intellectual property and content copyrights online, recognizing it is one of the most fundamental ICT topics to date.
ictQATAR had this exclusive interview with Gurry in Geneva during the conference. Read the full interview in the lastest ictQATAR e-newsletter issue: http://www.ictqatar.....
Communications Access for All!
By ict QATAR on Sun, 17/01/2010 - 6:08amAs the founder of Caption First, Patricia Graves is one of the pioneers in the field of assistive technologies for persons with disabilities.
Her company applied the basic concept of court reporting in an innovative way to help persons with hearing impairments actively engage in a variety of situations - from business meetings to classrooms. And as the technology has evolved, it has even helped break down language barriers, proving that assistive technologies benefit all, not just persons with disabilities.

A country says no to more than minarets
By Anne Applebaum
Tuesday, December 8, 2009
A few weeks ago, I found myself walking through a Swiss village -- okay, it was really a Geneva suburb -- called Nyon. Still, it looked like a village: There was a castle on the hill, and I could see some Roman ruins. There were a few shops and a nice view of the lake. There was no mosque to be seen. There were no women wearing burqas in the carefully landscaped city park.

GENEVA – Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on minarets on Sunday, barring construction of the iconic mosque towers in a surprise vote that put Switzerland at the forefront of a European backlash against a growing Muslim population.
Muslim groups in Switzerland and abroad condemned the vote as biased and anti-Islamic. Business groups said the decision hurt Switzerland's international standing and could damage relations with Muslim nations and wealthy investors who bank, travel and shop there.
a multi billions bird
By phoenix2009 on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 10:34amWhat a genius bird:)

A piece of bread dropped by a bird is being blamed for briefly shutting down the sophisticated Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) last week.
Part of a baguette fell onto an electrical transformer on Tuesday cutting power to the LHC, shutting down the multi-billion-franc particle accelerator on the Geneva-France border for three days.
The bread “caused a short circuit in an electrical outdoor installation that serves sectors 7-8 and 8-1 of the LHC,” CERN said in statement issued on its website.

Nuclear engineer arrested for al-Qaeda links
By Formatted Soul on Mon, 12/10/2009 - 7:50amFears that al-Qaeda is planning an attack on the nuclear industry in Europe were renewed yesterday after French secret agents arrested a physicist working at an atomic research centre.
The 32-year-old man, who was detained with his brother, 25, is suspected of providing a list of terrorist targets to North African Islamic radicals. He worked for the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, according to French police sources.
Agents were said to have intercepted messages in which the physicist, a Frenchman of Algerian origin, had suggested targets in France.
He is believed to have been in contact with members of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, an Algerian-based terror organisation that joined Osama bin Laden’s network in 2007.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: 7 DAYS LEFT
By Dracula on Wed, 30/09/2009 - 3:08pmIran has test-fired a series of medium- and longer-range missiles that put Israel, parts of Europe and US bases in the Gulf within potential striking range.
The White House called the move "provocative" but Iran's foreign ministry said the tests were merely part of an annual military drill, and were not a reaction to the nuclear crisis.
Iran insists that all its nuclear facilities are for peaceful energy purposes and rejects accusations from the US and others that it is seeking a nuclear weapon.
US President Barack Obama has hinted at pursuing tougher sanctions against Tehran if progress over the crisis is not made.
Russia recently signalled it might be prepared to soften its opposition to further sanctions.
